For centuries, the United Kingdom has occupied a position at the forefront of research into space and astronomy. Today this tradition continues with British scientists taking leading roles in missions to explore our place in space.
There are more than 30 departments in the UK that carry out research into astronomy or space. British scientists collaborate with researchers from institutions around the globe to develop concepts for new missions, build instrumentation and interpret the data that spacecraft send back. The UK also plays an active role in ground-based astronomy and is a member organisation of the European Southern Observatory and the Gemini Telescope Consortium.
In addition, British scientists have developed an international reputation in studies relating to our own planet. By participating in missions such as the European Space Agency’s Earth observing satellite, ENVISAT, they will assist in monitoring changes to the Earth’s land use and climate.
