Conferences or study visits for groups of teachers from schools across England to meet with their counterparts from a range of countries are regularly organised by the British Council.

These themed events bring teachers together from different educational contexts to look at issues of common interest. Where possible we try to include visits to schools as part of the programme to see educational practice at first hand and bring the theme of the conference to life. Not only is teachers’ Continuing Professional Development furthered, but very often there is the possibility of school links to flourish between the participants concerned.

Keep checking our News page for information on upcoming study visits/conferences for teachers.

Case Study - Teachers’ study visit to Bavaria

During May 2006 half-term, eight secondary teachers from schools across England travelled to Bavaria to explore and discuss best practice in language learning and vocational subjects in both countries. The English teachers were paired up with counterparts from vocational schools all over Bavaria, spending three days in their institutions.

The week started with a day-long workshop in Munich, where both English and German teachers shared ideas and expectations on the theme of languages and vocational subjects. In the Bavarian “Dual Vocational Training System.

Over the next three days, the English teachers each visited their host school, observing and participating in lessons and school life. Some of them had the opportunity to visit pupils on their work placements, including a trip to the Pepperami factory! This was also a time for teachers to discuss the issues around integrating language learning and vocational subjects, and in particular the use of this approach to motivate language learners.

On the final day, all participants came together again in Munich for a closing workshop, where the teachers shared experiences and discussed what had been learnt and observed in the way of new practice. They also shared future plans in many areas, including collaboration between the English and German schools, and developing the teaching of languages in a vocational context in England.
