This project of the British Council is aimed at attracting young people to science and the study of alternative sources of energy in schools using hydrogen energy as a basis.
The British Council together with the Institute for Hydrogen Energy, and Plasma Technologies (Russian Scientific Center, Kurchatov Institute) came up with the initiative to create optional classes – Hydrogen Clubs – in schools for the purpose of studying alternative energy sources and hydrogen in particular.
The British Council is planning to bring in a UK expert who will give master classes for the teachers participating in the project. This initiative will help to create a community of teachers who will carry out active work in Moscow and advise their colleagues in the regions. Each work group will define their scientific tasks, conduct the relevant research and present their results at the reporting conference which is to be held at the end of 2008.
The Kurchatov Institute has also opened a laboratory where classes will be given not only for school pupils but also for college students. The chief task of this laboratory is availability for all those who wish to know about and have interest in new technologies and hydrogen energy in particular.
The British Council provides demonstration equipment for the Hydrogen Clubs’ sessions: an installation for generation and use of hydrogen as well as an educational software program Alternative Energy Sources developed by instruction of the Mayor of London.
The Kurchatov Institute is also able to organize demonstrations of a number of accompanying technological processes (catalyst synthesis, assembly of electrolytic and fuel cells, etc.) and to engage college and school students in carrying out these processes (including the course of practical training).
The participants of the project, as of today are:
- Specialized schools No. 1515 and 1517
- Schools No. 705, 1943, 1136
- The laboratory of the Institute for Hydrogen Energy, and Plasma Technologies (Russian Scientific Center, Kurchatov Institute).
On 16 April 2008 the award ceremony took place for the winners of the Hydrogen Energy Contest, held as part of the joint project carried out by the British Council, the Department of Education for the North-West District of Moscow and the Institute for Hydrogen Energy and Plasma Technologies (Russian Scientific Center, Kurchatov Institute) – Hydrogen Clubs.
