Climate Change programme in Samara
The British Council Climate Change campaign starts in September 2006

In September - October 2006 the British Council is running ZeroCarbonCity programme looking at the impact of climate change around the world and demonstrating the UK’s commitment to tackling this global issue and to developing a low carbon economy. The intensive programme will include a remarkable photo exhibition, a provocative public debate with UK and Russian speakers, Café Scientifique discussion evenings, and many other public events designed to make society wake up to the global issue of climate change.

PHOTO EXHIBITION NORTHSOUTHEASTWEST

INTERACTIVE SEMINAR FOR TEACHERS

Experts of Alabin Museum will provide an interactive seminar for teachers. The participants of the seminar will discuss the problems on Climate Change and receive useful tips for the implementation of Climate Change materials in class activities.

How to tell about Climate Change with the help of games and quizzes? We will teach students and teachers who is interested in organising interactive activities for children and adults and making climate change issues relevant and exciting. Experts of Samara department of International Ecological Union will run the master –class and invite teachers and students to try their hands at conducting activities during the NorthSouthEastWest exhibition.

PHOTO CROSS

The participants of the photo cross are given six hours to make a photo report on the suggested ecological topic. The task will be given before the start of the competition. The most interesting works will be exhibited. The finalists and winners will receive certificates and prizes from the British Council and sponsors. The organisers of the competition are the British Council and ‘Performance’ journal.

LECTURE FOR STUDENTS

Lecture ‘Energy efficient technologies in food production’ will take place in Samara State Technical University. Students of Samara State Technical University and other Universities will learn about the new areas of research in Cardiff University. The research is connected with new technologies of food production. Dr. Andrew Flynn, Senior Lecturer in Environmental Policy and Planning, Cardiff University, will show the examples of energy safety. The entrance is free.

Climate Change is discussed not only by scientists but also by businessmen. The realization of Kyoto protokhol is widely discussed since Russia joined the international agreement. The round table ‘Energy safety and energy efficient technologies’ will be organised in the framework of Trade Saloon 2006. Dr. Andrew Flynn, Senior Lecturer in Environmental Policy and Planning, Cardiff University and representatives of Federal Agency on Innovations and Science will take part in the discussion.

SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE 'CLIMATE CHANGE: REASONS, IMPACT AND INNOVATIONS’

The British Council with Samara Universities will run a one – day conference dedicated to the new research on ecological problems. The plenary session will be chaired by Professor Geoffrey Boulton, Vice-Principal, Edinburgh University, Chairman of the Royal Society's Energy Policy Advisory Committee and member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The areas of the conference are ecology, energy efficiency and innovations. Students and PhD students will be offered to present their research during the poster session and publish thesis’s in the collected works.

The seminar ‘Impact of Climate Change on the ecosystem of Volga region’ will take place in the Institue of Ecological Problems of Volga Region RAS. Prof. John Harwood, Cardiff University will take part in the seminar. The issues related to the development of Volga region for the next thirty years will be discussed by Russian and British scientists during the seminar.
