National Theatre Live: the last of the Haussmans
Moscow, 13, 20 December, 24 January 2012

British Council Russia together with CoolConnections art association present the second performance of NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE in Russia in the framework of new 2012-2013 season.

The performance is called «The Last of the Haussmans» and it will be shown in Formula Kino Gorizont cinema hall (Moscow), in "Avrora" and "Gallery" ( Saint-Petersburg) on December 13, 20 and January, 24 at 19:30.

«The Last of the Haussmans» proceeds the 2012-2013 season of the project National Theatre Live. In the center of a stage story is Julie Walters, a resilient granny in her middle sixties who hasn’t exchanged ideals of her hippie youth and keeps having a good time at the age of 70. The performance “The Last of the Haussmans” is a dramatic debut of the actor Steven Beresford.

His story follows traditions of a realistic theatre (including Russian theatre tradition). According to a plot, Walters – a former enfant terrible of the local society who spent a half of her life in Indian ashrams and London squats – restores her health back after an operation in her family house, a beauty art-deco styled estate on the riverside of Devon. Responding to the call of their mother, the whole family unwillingly flocks together, including tabby, masterful daughter Libby, good-for-nothing son Nick – a gay and a given up drug addict – and rebellious granddaughter Summer. Doctor Pieter and a local sport star Daniel join the hardly drinking company shortly. During two hours of the performance, a group of six characters will spectacularly, with equal portions of drama and humour sort out their relationships – quarrel and make peace, open and heal the wounds, and inflict each other new ones.

A chain of Chekhov’s allusions gives additional witticism and theatrical intrigue to Beresford’s play. Hints of «The Cherry Orchard» and “The Seagull” emerge in some mise-en-scenes, and Rory Kinnear in the role of Nick extremely resembles Russian actor Alexander Kalyagin in «Unfinished Piece for the Player Piano»
