NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE in Russia: "THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME"
Moscow and Saint-Petersburg, 22 and 29 November 2012

Art-group CoolConnections and British Council are proud to present the new 2012-2013 season of NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE in Russia. The season will begin with the encore screenings of "The curious incident of the dog in the night time"which will be shown in Moscow and Saint-Petersburg on November 22 and 29.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time provides a deep and peculiar insight into the life of an autistic teenager. The National Theatre play was adapted from the eponymous best-selling novel by Mark Haddon, which won the Whitbread Book Award and has been selected by the British public as one of the best books of the decade. The protagonist is a 15-year-old boy Christopher who sets off to solve the mysterious murder of a neighbor’s dog that was pierced by a garden fork. The investigation will lead Christopher to a shocking discovery about his family and compel him to undertake a risky and event-filled trip from his hometown of Swindon to London.

The play boasts unique minimalistic set decorations that can rightfully be considered a masterpiece of modern stage design. They were inspired by Lars von Trier’s Dogville and its sequel Manderlay (which in their turn take after TV plays of the 70s). Through this top-notch set design the audience will be swiftly introduced to a kaleidoscope of diverse images, where drab Swindon street magically transforms into the picturesque starred sky that morphs into a complex mathematical table and then shifts to a desolate train station or an underground escalator.

The National Royal Theatre production features a very impressive cast. And it also marks a real theatrical breakthrough for 28-year-old Luke Treadaway whose previous acting career mostly revolved around films.

Simon Stephens did a truly remarkable job on adapting the original novel for the theatre: he not only adjusted the language and style to fit the theatrical conventions, but also introduced a number of peculiar devices, such as a sudden break of the fourth wall or a surprising mathematical divertissement-like epilogue.

On top of all that is the rampant electronic soundtrack masterfully composed by Adrian Sutton who also wrote music for another stage production War Horse as well as a number of feature films.
