UK-Russia young journalists programme

The purpose of this programme is for young journalists in UK and Russia to learn more about each others’ countries and their respective media, in order to build trust and to be able to report objectively on events.

Russian Journalism School in the Moscow State University
14-27 September 2008

British Council Russia is holding a Russian Journalism School for British students.
10 students from Westminster University who were chosen on competitive basis  will come to Moscow to participate in a 2-week specially designed course, which includes both academic and hands-on parts.

Through the duration of the course, the students will be introduced to the best practices of Russian journalists, this includes a number of field trips, as well as the lectures of famous journalism gurus.
At the end of the course the students will receive special diplomas of the Moscow State University.

Although links between Moscow State University (MGU) faculty of journalism and many European countries are strong, with German, French and Italian centres already established, so far there has been no centre of UK journalism studies. This is set to change in 2008 with British Council support.

The British Council will provide MGU with a range of resources – books, video materials, journals and on-line articles - which will give young Russian students better access to the UK media, and more information about how it works. At the same time, a number of UK universities will be given better access to the Russian media in the same way.

There will be visiting lectures by UK media experts to MGU, and by Russian media experts to the UK for round table events and lectures. There will be debates between UK and Russian journalists about current issues affecting the two countries and how they are handled in the press. These will be broadcast on-line through pod casts.

An Introduction to the UK Media course will be run at the University of Westminster for Russian students, and a similar course in Russia for UK students. The students will produce their own on-line journal at the end of the course.
