Future City Game in Perm

On 6 October 2010 there was a Future City Game that took place in the framework of the laboratory «Museum and design: socio-cultural projects in cities» and was devoted to the redevelopment of one of the central Perm districts.

The game was organised by the British Council together with Perm Design Centre.

Welcome to see the photos from the game and a short video made by the Perm TV!

Museum Mile district is situated between The Ordjonikidze street, one of the central Perm streets that goes past the river Kama, and a railway station. As its elder sister in New-York, the Museum mile is going to be the cultural centre, attractive for local people and for tourists. The oldest museum of Perm is situated in the historical part of the district, there is also the picture gallery and a museum for wooden sculpture. In the nearest time there will be a museum for modern art built in the district, next to the riverside station, also some art-objects will be created at the other end of the Museum Mile, close to the railway station.

The Future City Game was devoted to the following questions:

- what is the museum in the modern context? What are the specifications of the Museum Mile infrastructure?

- How to make the Museum Mile solve the local problems?

- Which business and creative initiatives could be put into practice during the project?

Please find below the ideas of the Future City Game participants.

Winning idea:

Museum Mile: territory for the edutainment

The aim of the project is to create the new multilevel event platform in the historical part of the city: from Ordjonokidze street till the Sobornaya square.  The first step is building of the air prospect - the light construction made of beams and desks. The prospect will be used as the event space, the exhibition centre, the historical museum, the observation desk and the platform for leisure activities. The second aim  of the project is to improve the city streets: to enlarge the roads, to build new parking spaces, to reconstruct the historical buildings, to work out the tours around Perm.

The third step is to create the Art-embankment with concert stages and souvenir shops.

The project will make the city territory bigger and will give more opportunities to children and their parents, to tourists and local people.

Other ideas

Museum Mile: start-up

Aims of the project:

- to preserve the historical traditions: reconstruction of the old railway station, Spaso-Preobrazhensky cathedral, research of the Perm geology;

- to form a creative centre in the city: platforms for workshops, trampoline street, underground tunnel, cinema and Sunday markets;

- innovation on the environment: environmental friendly transport, air pollution sensors;

Project resources: discounts; working places; business development.

Interactive museum of Perm: from Perm period to Perm district

Interactive museum is an educational complex divided into zones:

- Historical zone: «Perm – the principal town of the province» model, Perm period map, historical exposition, «Museum mile» taxi tours, photos of Perm, videos.

- «Vox populi»: festivals, performances for local people;

- Children’s zone: intellectual games on ecology, local history, culture and geography;

- Leisure activities: cafes, souvenir shops.

Museum mile: innovations in architecture

The project will use the European experience in the creative economy and design at the territory of Perm. A few galleries will be built in Perm, the city plan will be changed by using the landscape design including the bridge across the river Kama, and a new transport system.

Museum mile: escape from the dead-end

59 festivals in 59 regions.

The existing concert halls don’t satisfy the modern criteria. The new halls will be built at the territory of the old industrial zones (such as Rempultmash factory).

There will be also built the historical museum of Perm, the museum of fine arts, interactive centre and a River-mall store.

The embankment of Kama river will be used as a recreation zone with cafes and shops.

Two banks of Kama river will be joined together with the new multilevel bridge, that will solve the traffic problem.
