Lecture of Mark Miller, Tate Modern and Tate Britain
21 November, 2011, The Garage Center for Contemporary Culture

On 21 November  2011 at 20:00 in the Centre for Contemporary Culture GARAGE the British Council is organizing a lecture by Mark Miller – a specialist in Tate Britain and Tate Modern’s educational programmes, who is invited to the VII Festival of Museums’ Programmes for Children “Children’s Days in St Petersburg”! Information partners of the projects are ICOM Russia and GARAGE.

In his lecture “Transmission of meaning – Participation, collaboration and creative practices” Mr. Miller will discuss the role, methods and strategies of Tate Learning related to creative practices within museums and galleries.

He will also focus on the role of contemporary artists, their artistic processes and practices in conjunction with the Tate Collection displays and exhibitions, as a platform for learning, negotiation of the institution and the transference of cultural experiences. He will present the function of sustaining diverse cultural and creative sources as a means of developing networks and cross disciplinary creative collaborations. Finally, he will discuss integrated practices at Tate that utilise digital platforms, interventions within the galleries public spaces, consultation and critical engagement with young people.

Tate has been working with young people beyond the schools sector since 1988, using methods whereby young people contribute to the programme (and the institution) through consultation and peer-leadership. Established at Tate Liverpool by Toby Jackson and Naomi Horlock in 1994, Young Tate is now the umbrella name for the youth programme across all four gallery sites, as well as a dedicated online space.
