Reconstruction fashion exhibition
24 April -10 May 2012, ARTPLAY Design Center , Moscow

The British Council is happy to announce that the exhibition "Reconstruction: Cultural Heritage and the Making of Contemporary Fashion" will open on the 24th of April 2012 at ARTPLAY Design Centre featuring the work of seven leading UK fashion designers.

Some of British fashion’s most internationally renowned designers – Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood, Hussein Chalayan and Sophia Kokosalaki – are shown alongside rapidly emerging names Peter Jensen, Marios Schwab and Osman Yousefzada.

Reconstruction will feature 16 designs and 2 films and is the most important exhibition of contemporary fashion that the British Council has presented in recent years, The work on display will offer a snapshot of some of the traditions and cultures that inspire these designers, who all live in the UK, whilst consciously exploring their links to other countries and communities in their work.

The British Council is the UK’s leading cultural relations organisation, and has the arts at the heart of many of its projects globally. The creative industries have the power to shape people’s understanding of the UK, and we enable these collaborations between institutions and designers across the world.

British Council’s Director of Architecture, Design and Fashion VICKY RICHARDSON said:

“We hope that this exhibition, showcasing some of the most innovative and exciting designers working in Britain today will prove to be a great success and pave the way for future collaborations.”

The exhibition has been curated by Alison Moloney, British Council London, and designed by Pippa Nissen Studio. The graphic design was provided by studio Kellenberger-White, which developed a new typeface in response to the sharp, angular lines of the exhibition structure. The British Council is delighted to be collaborating with leading high-end mannequin manufacturer Bonaveri who has generously provided 16 Schläppie 2200 mannequins for the exhibition's tour.

British Council Russia in partnership with British Higher School of Design in Moscow and Theory and Practice portal will also run the intense wrap-around educational programme that will include:

Special guest of the Reconstruction opening is PETER JENSEN, a Danish born, London-based designer who will present this latest A/W 2012-13 collection at the opening ceremony. Peter Jensen said:

“The work on display in Reconstruction is inspired by a trip I took to Greenland to research my Aunt Jytte who owned a cafй and cab company there and was fascinated by 1960s fashion. I hope my work will encourage young fashion designers in Kazakhstan and the other countries to which this exhibition will travel to look at their own heritage and environment and take inspiration from them.”

Official opening of the Reconstruction is on the 23rd of April 2012 at ARTPLAY Design Center (by accreditation only).

RECONSTRUCTION will be opened for public on 24 April -10 May 2012 from 11.00 till 21.00.
