British Council provides consultancy for the Rural Education Project run by the Romanian Ministry of Education. During 2004 – 2009, British Council provides assistance in two main areas of work:

  • School-based professional development programme for rural teachers
  • Strengthening Monitoring, Evaluation and Policy Making Capacity

British Council is in charge with:

  • designing training modules and materials in a number of ten pedagogical areas (including student-centred and interactive teaching, student evaluation, school management, use of computers in schools);
  • training mentors and subject trainers at national level,
  • managing the mentoring process for teachers in two thousand five hundred clusters of rural schools all over Romania,
  • monitor the quality of work delivered by mentors and subject trainers.

Since January 2005 the pilot phase of the project has covered a number of six counties (Arad, Arges, Dolj, Iasi, Maramures and Sibiu). During the national phase (September 2005 - August 2009) most teachers working in rural schools will attend the professional development programme.
