Making a world of difference
Stories of our work from around the globe

We bring together people throughout the world, every day of the year, to build lasting relationships and forge new ideas. Here are just some of the ways in which we're helping to create opportunities and make cultural connections across the globe.

A new home for English
Teachers of English have a new global home on the web with the launch of TeachingEnglish. The website, launched at IATEFL on 8 April, brings together everything busy teachers need for the classroom and the staffroom.

Climate champions
The environment ministers of the G8 will meet in Kobe, Japan. One of their items of business will be a challenge presented to them by a coalition of concerned young individuals from 39 countries who met in London in March to agree an agenda for tackling the challenge presented by climate change.

The beautiful game in India
An innovative programme run by the British Council and Barclays Premier League is giving young people the chance to communicate in two world languages – English and football.

Development in Ghana
Young people have an essential role to play in helping countries achieve the UN’s Millennium Development Goals, as a programme we run jointly with the World Bank Institute shows.

No laughing matter
If you are a first generation migrant in Europe, you are 50 per cent more likely to have been made fun of in the last three months, according to research we've published into the lives of schoolchildren.

Record number of exams
Almost one million candidates sat an IELTS (the International English Language Testing System) exam last year; a record for the British Council’s jointly-managed scheme.

The world's language
Ahead of his recent high-profile visits to China and India, UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced a boost to English language learning, teaching and training facilities for people throughout the world. We will help develop a new website to deliver that goal.

Our work in Russia
Despite the chill in the political relationship between the two countries, we are committed to keeping channels of cultural exchange open between Russia and the UK.

Slavery debate
Young people from all over the world recently joined with UK politicians in Westminster to discuss the legacy of slavery, as part of our Africa 2007 programme.

Commonwealth People's Blog
For the first time ever, we’ll be running an interactive space to support the Commonwealth People’s Forum in November. The People’s Forum has been designed to offer opportunities for us all to join the discussions that are shaping the Commonwealth. Our blog will ensure that these opportunities extend to those who are unable to attend the event.

Partners in fashion
In partnership with Fashion Fringe, our New Silk Road campaign recently gave four talented designers the opportunity to broaden their cultural influences before bringing their collections to the catwalks of London Fashion Week.

UK-India initiative
In this increasingly connected world, higher education institutions and governments are making the most from opportunities to collaborate, with pioneering ideas, such as the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI); an initiative we've been supporting this past year.

Climate Project
Our Connecting Classrooms project recently became a partner in Plant for the Planet by pledging to offset its carbon footprint with tree planting. It will also be taking part in the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP).

Peace Club
Peace and trust are not familiar concepts in Northern Nigeria and Kano, where religious and ethnic tensions have led to conflict over the past few years. Now though, our Peace Club project is developing understanding between young people.

African graduates
We recently celebrated the British Undergraduate Fellowship Scheme (BRUFS) with the official launch of its alumni. The scheme brought young students to the UK during apartheid. 20 years on these students are helping to shape South Africa's economy.

Climate summit
In collaboration with London's Natural History Museum, we helped 60 international students attend the 2007 International Student Summit, 'Greening Cities'. Here they heard from scientists, policy-makers and politicians, while sharing views with UK students.

Venice Biennale 2007
Venice Biennale is the world’s premier showcase of contemporary visual art. Under this year’s theme, 'Think with the Sense – Feel with Mind. Art in the Present Tense', Tracey Emin is exhibiting new works in one of four UK pavilions. Also on show is one of the largest British exhibitions to be staged in recent years with leading artists representing England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
