British Council Qatar
Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture

In 2013, Qatar and the United Kingdom are coming together to celebrate and strengthen the ties between their countries.

A major programme of events is taking place to generate an ongoing exchange of culture and knowledge in the arts, education, science and sport. The year aims to increase engagement between people and institutions in both countries in the spirit of innovation, openness and learning.

The events and activities are taking place in both Qatar and the UK. The British Council and Qatar Museums Authority are coordinating the events programme, in association with several partners, including leading arts and education institutions in both countries.

Some of the highlights in the early part of the year include an "Arts and Disability Festival" in Doha, featuring the work of leading British Deaf and disabled artists and a "UK Cinema Showcase" – monthly screenings of the best in British Cinema, organised in partnership with Doha Film Institute. You can also now hear the British Council’s award-winning international radio show The Selector in Qatar, on QBS Radio (97.5 FM) on Sundays between 4pm and 6pm. In the UK, activities have included the unveiling of "Rock on Top of Another Rock", a large-scale sculpture in Kensington Gardens by the artist duo Fischli/Weiss

The science season will consist of a number of engaging, exciting and inspiring activities:

Scientists will compete with scientists: FameLab
Scientists will engage with the public: Café Sci
Scientists, the public and decision makers will discuss, reflect upon and offer solutions to the grand challenges: Public Debates and Roundtables.

There’s plenty more coming up later in the year. Forthcoming highlights include "Pearls", a major exhibition at the V&A Museum in London, and a new exhibition in Doha of work by leading British artist Damien Hirst.
