Qatar UK 2013 is a season of events to celebrate the strong relationship between Qatar and the United Kingdom, and to develop new partnerships between our organizations and institutions. The year will see increased engagement between the people of both countries in a spirit of innovation, openness and learning.
The British Council and Qatar Museums Authority are coordinating the Qatar UK 2013 programme, in association with institutional partners in both countries. HM Ambassador Nicholas Hopton and the British Embassy team in Doha provide essential high-level support and expertise. HRH the Prince of Wales is the UK Patron of Qatar UK 2013 and the Qatari Patron is the Emir, Sheikh Tamim. The UK steering group is chaired by Graham Sheffield, Director Arts, British Council, and includes representatives from the FCO, DCMS, UKTI, Visit Britain and the UK HE International Unit, as well as top UK arts institutions, UCL and the British Library. The events programme is being organised across eight core themes: art and design, film and media, performing arts, education, sports, science and innovation, sustainability, and community building. The aspiration is that there will be an equal balance of activities in Qatar and the UK, and that the diversity of the UK will be reflected both in the work presented and the locations chosen for events.
Why are we doing Qatar UK 2013?
