We work with the Ministry of Education, and UNRWA to provide training for English language teachers, access to resources, network and support for their own language development. We also run development workshops for undergraduate English students and trainee teachers.
Since 2008, we have been running a major English language trainer training and teacher training programme for government and UNRWA school teachers in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and UNRWA. This programme aims to support the government’s objective of continuing to improve the learning of students by enhancing the skills of teachers.
In 2008, we trained 30 supervisors and teachers from the West Bank and Gaza who in turn trained approximately 1000 teachers in the subject of Classroom Language, specifically adapted to the needs of the national curriculum through English for Palestine.
In 2009, we continued to work with this group of trainers and also trained a new group of trainers. Both these groups of trainers are now delivering workshops for school teachers across the West Bank and Gaza during 2009 and early 2010 with British Council support.
We are working with Al Ayyam on an English language learning initiative to devote one page in the newspaper for the LearnEnglish product on the first and third Thursday of every month for a year: a total of 24 pages. The first page appeared in June 2009. This page which comprises a story, puzzles and quizzes is aimed at adult intermediate learners and aims to offer the opportunity to improve your English in an easy, fun way.
We are working on a project for an English Reading and Literature Club for students at Al-Aqsa University. As well as speakers from Palestine, we are also arranging sessions with UK speakers by video-conference.
In 2009 we ran a course on “Lesson planning and use of resources for language teaching” for University Language Centre teachers at universities across the West Bank. We are hoping to follow this up with further training for university teachers in 2010.
