Chevening Scholarships

What is Chevening?

The Chevening Scholarship Programme is a worldwide scholarship scheme funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) with UK universities and administered by us.  Chevening Scholarships are prestigious awards offered in over 150 countries to enable talented graduates and young professionals to become familiar with UK and gain skills to benefit their countries.

How many Chevening scholarships are available to Palestinians?

About 20 Chevening scholarships, half under our Joint Chevening programmes, are awarded to Palestinians each year to pursue mainly Masters courses at UK universities. The Joint Chevening Scholarships are co-funded by the Said Foundation, Open Society Institute (OSI), Dahdaleh Foundation/LSE, and University of Edinburgh (Birzeit Gratduates only), University of Edinburgh (Palestinian Students residents in Gaza only). The Said Foundation and OSI Joint Chevening programmes will be advertised separately in autumn/winter 2009/2010

How and when can I apply?

'The application process for scholarships beginning in 2010 will be submitted online; deadline to submit your application is 30 November 2009. Click here to process your application.
Please note that no paper applications will be accepted.

What subjects can I study?

We will consider Chevening applications for study in most areas, but priority will be given as follows:

Applicants in Political Science and International Relations, Governance, Media; Business, Economics and Finance, Management, Environmental Studies, Arts, Media and Communication, Law, Conflict Resolution, Diplomatic Training, Media Studies, Banking, Development Studies, Journalism, Public Administration, Computer and Information Technology, and Engineering  should apply for the Chevening Scholarships.
Applicants in Human Rights and Human Rights Law should apply for the Joint OSI/Chevening/University of Essex scholarships.
Applicants in Nationalism Studies, Policy Studies, Social and Political Theory, and Social Research should apply for the Joint OSI/Chevening/University of Edinburgh scholarships
Applicants in Development, Education, and Health should apply for the Joint Said Foundation/Chevening scholarships.
Applicants for the MSc Global Politics at the London School of Economics and Political Science should apply for the Joint Dahdaleh/LSE/Chevening Scholarships
Residents of Gaza should apply for the joint Chevening/University of Edinburgh scholarships
Graduates of Birzeit University should apply for the joint Chevening/University of Edinburgh scholarships

Candidates' conditions of eligibility?
Applicants must:

Display intellectual ability and leadership potential
Have an adequate standard of English i.e. 6.5 marking or over in IELTS( but exceptionally pre-sessional English language training might be provided subject to the merits each case)
Age 25-35
Already hold a degree of an equivalent standard to at least a good UK second-class Honour degree
Be a national and resident of the Palestinian Territories at the time of applying for the award and intend to return to there at the end of the period of study
Candidates invited to interview must provide proof of Residency and ID in the Palestinian Territories.
Not already have received or currently receiving financial benefit from a previous HMG funded scholarship.

Employees, employees' relatives (or former employees who have left employment less than 5 years before) of FCO (including FCO posts), the British Council, will not be eligible to apply for these awards.

What does the scholarship cover?

The scholarship covers the following:

Tuition fees (up to a maximum of £12,000 /-)
Gratis student visa
Pre-departure briefing from the British Council
Arrival allowances
Thesis allowances
A monthly allowance to cover living expenses
Travel costs to and from the UK
Scholarships do not cover the costs for accompanying family
