Event: Cities Exhibition
Date: 12 January 2013
Location: Birzeit University Museum

Don’t miss the chance to attend the opening of the 4th edition of the Cities Exhibition: “Jericho- beyond the celestial and terrestrial” on 12 January 2012 at 13.00 in Birzeit University Museum. The event is organised as part of the British Council Palestine’s Arts programme and in partnership with Birzeit University Museum. Our support for artist Sarah Beddington culminated in collaboration with the Birzeit University Museum team and other Palestinian artists to produce art works that depict Jericho in connection to the landscape of Palestine with all its material and immaterial connotations.

More about the exhibition:

The third phase of the 4rd edition of Cities Exhibition, 'Jericho - beyond the Celestial and Terrestrial' is an exhibition that revolves around the idea of ‘The Museum, The Political‘. It is an attempt to transform the museum into a discursive space that utilizes the artworks produced by participating artists into material for ongoing discussion about ‘the political’. ‘The political’ stands for the alternative production of knowledge and practices that shape and negotiate the formal political discourse and juxtapose it with other social possibilities. A forum forms the heart of the exhibition and is designed to allow future presentations, talks, debates and discussions by students and staff of Birzeit University, as well as, the public. Documentary material from both the Notebook and Jericho Walks will be displayed in the heart of the exhibit as a discursive fuel for the activities of the forum. Surrounding the forum, the work of the 5 artists transgresses the stereotypical Jericho and surfaces as an inspiration for the public to question ‘the political’. Art is thus the mirror through which the 5 artists attempt to show Jericho in connection to the landscape of Palestine with all its material and immaterial connotations.

Artists: Iyad Issa, Samah Hijawi, Sarah Beddington, Shuruq Harb and Susanne Bosch

Curator: Yazid Anani

PRIMARY ENGLISH TEACHING PROGRAMME

To give children in Palestine a good start in English we have focused on how children learn in Primary years, and how teachers can enable this. In an environment where teachers’ travel is impeded and internet access is uneven, we provide training in districts teachers can reach, and bring print and digital resources to them, in partnership with the Ministry of Education. In this training teachers experience and practice organising pair and group work, making puppets and big books, and using songs, chants and games to best enable learning in Primary classes.

The most wide reaching training programme this year has been of the Certificate in Primary English Language Teaching. In a joint initiative with the Ministry and UNRWA, British Council trainers trained 64 Ministry of Education trainers from West Bank districts, joined by three from UNRWA. Amaniy Arikat, a teacher from Jericho wrote I was very happy to know that the combined effort of all the trainers in training would lead to over 400 English teachers in Palestine benefiting.

The initial February training reached more than this in 14 districts, and the course proved very popular, with participants telling us and the ministry how many more teachers would benefit from it. As a result, 850 more teachers are being trained across the West Bank and East Jerusalem from August to October. The programme is reaching most primary English teachers, and we plan to repeat the success with Gaza UNRWA this October, training UNRWA trainers in Cairo.

All trainers are supplied with stationery and training materials in print and on USB sticks, while every trainee receives Learn English Kids learner activities on CD ROMs, refreshments and transport costs”
