So you want to manage people?

Think you’re a good listener, a consensus-builder?
Or are you more of an authoritarian figure who likes to lay down the law?
Do you let employees get on and do their job?
Or do you know best?

Come and find out what kind of manager you are, or would like to be.

The Managing People course aims to equip you with a range of skills to deal with the day-to-day staff issues facing the modern manager.

So what will you learn on the course? Here is just a taste of what to expect:

Interpersonal skills

Active listening - not just listening to the other person, whether it's a customer or a colleague, but showing you're listening. There are simple techniques that can help you with this.

How good are you at getting things done? How do you react under stress? The many demands of professional life today mean you have to know how to manage your time effectively. We’ll look at how to prioritise not just for immediate tasks but for longer time frames.

There are also sessions on analysing your personality type and assertiveness training. This will help you reflect upon and improve your effectiveness in handling staff conflicts.

Intrapersonal skills

Another key area is the performance appraisal system – we’ll be looking at counselling skills, setting objectives and helping you to develop your staff’s full potential.

We also study teambuilding. How good are you at motivating others or identifying and utilising group dynamics? The course deals with the essentials of delegation, establishing deadlines and what to do when the team is pulling in different directions.

The other strand to the course addresses the more formal aspect of the management of people. How much do you know about current employment law? Could you design a successful recruitment policy or identify a transparent and effective disciplinary procedure?

There are two course requirements:

To give a presentation of around 15 minutes on a management issue to be agreed between you and the course tutor during the first week. There is also a short dissertation of 2,500 words based on a case study linked to one of the topics dealt with on the course.

Sounds like a challenge for you?
