In this section you practise a type of listening question where you hear extracts from five different people, each person talking in turn about the same general subject. You have to match one of six sentences to each speaker. There are three different listening exercises in this section. The first is about how people use the Internet, the second contains university teachers talking to students and the third has people remembering what their fathers were like.
1 Why use the Internet?
You will hear five people being interviewed for a television company about why they use the Internet. Match each speaker to one of the reasons A - F that they give for using the Internet. There is one extra reason which you don't need to use - match this to the empty box after the five speakers. Before you listen, read the advice below on listening to short texts. For further help, check the Hint for each question. Remember to click Comment for an explanation of each answer, after clicking Submit.
Advice on listening to short texts
- In this type of question you listen to five different people speaking. Each person speaks for about 15 seconds, and there may be only one or two words which show what he or she is talking about.
- The words which the speaker uses will not be the same as in the question. For example, if in the question it says "cooking instructions", the speaker may use the word recipes. So, what you have to do is listen for synonyms which coincide with the question. But be careful: there may be tricks!
- The first time you listen, mark the ones you are sure about. The second time you listen, concentrate on the speakers you are not sure about.
2 Talking to students
You will hear extracts of five teachers at a university talking to students. Match each speaker to one of the reasons A - F. There is one extra reason which you don't need to use - match this to the empty box after the five speakers. For help, check the Hint for each question. Remember to click Comment for an explanation of each answer, after clicking Submit.
3 People remember their fathers
You will hear five people talking about their childhood memories of their fathers. Match each speaker with one of the reasons A - F. There is one extra reason which you don't need to use - match this to the empty box after the five speakers. Before you listen, read some more advice below on listening to short texts. For further help, check the Hint for each question. Remember to click Comment for an explanation of each answer, after clicking Submit.
Further advice on listening to short texts
- To get the correct answer in this type of listening, you have to listen carefully to every word of what is said. Quite often words are used which express the opposite idea to the correct one. For example, you might have a question which says "He often took us swimming". One of the speakers may say: "Unfortunately, he couldn't swim, but he took us for long walks in the country." So listen carefully!
