Meeting your mate in the 21st century

Some people who meet and get to know each other through online dating sites decide to meet up in person. The following article gives some tips on ensuring the date is organised as safely as possible.

Before you read the article, think about what kind of advice you would give a friend who was going to meet a stranger for the first time. Then read the article and see if it includes any of your ideas.

Tips for safe dating

These days millions of people meet up every day in cyberspace to chat to friends on the other side of the world, to play on-line games of chess or scrabble or to meet the love of their life. But how can we be sure that the people we are chatting to really are who they say they are? And how can we protect ourselves from people who might hurt us? If you are thinking of joining an on-line dating agency in order to meet potential "mates", you should be cautious. Follow our top tips for safe off-line dating and have a great time!

Tip 1. ………………………………….

When you arrange to meet somebody face to face for the first time, do not reveal your address. Arrange to meet in a public place where there are lots of other people around and, if possible, arrange to be part of a bigger group.

Tip 2. …………………………………

Whether you go to a restaurant for a three-course meal or a pub for a few drinks, it is a good idea to “go Dutch” - to pay half each. That way there can be no misunderstandings or feelings that you have a favour to return.

Tip 3. ………………………………….

Alcohol can affect our judgement and change our character. It might be a good idea to avoid alcohol on a first date so that you have a clear head and know exactly how you feel about your companion. If you feel you need a drink in order to lose your inhibitions, make sure you limit yourself and keep your drink in sight at all times so that nobody has the chance of adding any other drug to it.

Tip 4. ……………………………………

Arrive at your chosen date with your own transport. If you drive then bring your own car and make sure it is filled with petrol. If you do not have a car then either arrange for a friend to take you and to pick you up at a certain hour or book a taxi in advance and make sure you have the taxi telephone number with you in case you need to change the time.

Tip 5. …………………………………….

Always make sure that other people know exactly where you are. It might also be a good idea to arrange for a friend or family member to call you at a certain time to check that everything is alright. You could also arrange to meet up with friends later in the evening so that they will come and pick you up from your date.

Above all, enjoy your dating. You never know, you might meet the love of your life!
