Barclays Premier League

Chelsea 2 v 1 Manchester United

Mickey Butt (Chelsea fan)

Chelsea played quite well in this game unlike some of their recent games. They put Manchester United under a lot of pressure though should have had more shots on goal. Chelsea scored just before half time with a cross from Didier Drogba which he delivered with three players around him.  Michael Ballack met the cross with good header into the corner of the net. Chelsea looked to be controlling the second half until an uncharacteristic mistake by Ricardo Carvalho presented Wayne Rooney with ball with time and space to run in on goal and slot it past Petr Cech. This set Chelsea back a bit but there was still half an hour to go which gave them time to build up pressure again. With just five minutes to go Chelsea were awarded a penalty which Michael Ballack sent the keeper the wrong way and scored. With just two games to go Manchester United and Chelsea are now level on points at the top of the Premiership with United’s goal difference giving them the advantage.

Sunderland 3 v 2 Middlesbrough

Chris Cavey (Sunderland fan)

In Sunderland’s last 2 seasons in the Premier League they finished last each time and broke records as the worst team in Premier League history.  This win against local rivals Middlesbrough means Sunderland are safe from relegation with 2 games to go – another sign of the effect the Roy Keane revolution has had on the club.

Boro scored first after just 4 minutes but Sunderland equalised 2 minutes later then took the lead just before half time – a neat finish by Michael Chopra.

The second half wasn’t pretty and Boro’s equaliser was undeserved but once again – the sixth time this season – Sunderland scored in injury time.  Darryl Murphy’s header from a corner secured the 3 points and, more importantly, Premier League survival.

Keane is demanding more money to spend in the summer.  If he gets it, I confidently predict that Sunderland will finish in the top 10 next season.
