THE BRITISH COUNCIL IN PORTUGAL
The British Council was founded in 1934. Visit our history site to discover more, and see how Portugal was one of our first centres - the Instituto Inglês in Coimbra in 1938.
OUR STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
OUR GOVERNANCE AND FUNDING
WHO WE ARE

The British Council connects people worldwide with learning opportunities and creative ideas from the United Kingdom and builds lasting relationships between the UK and other countries.

With our global network we aim to be the world 's leading cultural relations organisation.

We work in three main areas:

Inter-cultural understanding and positive social change
The UK ’s creative and knowledge economy
Climate change

Our activities include:

teaching English to adults and children
teacher training
developing professional networks and partnerships that share knowledge and experience
promoting British education, training, examinations and qualifications
working closely with governments and NGOs in the areas of good governance and human rights
showcasing the innovation, creativity and excellence of British science, arts, literature and design.

This work is driven by our strong belief in internationalism, a commitment to professionalism and an enthusiasm for creativity. These qualities, coupled with our integrity and our conviction that cultural relations can help individuals and the world community to thrive, make the British Council a good partner and a special place to work.

Equal Opportunities and Diversity

As an international organization working in over 100 different countries there are hugely complex equality and diversity issues to contend with. In many countries, there are different social norms, cultural expectations and legal obligations, but across all, we operate with a clear commitment to equality and diversity. Managing diversity is also central to the British Council's values.

The Integrated Equality Scheme is the tool we have developed to help us promote equality and eliminate discrimination in the areas of gender, race and disability. As a UK public body we are legally required to promote equality in these areas, but because we are an international organisation our Integrated Equality Scheme applies worldwide, not just in the UK.
