An expanding European Union and a more interconnected Europe has brought down barriers – physical, political, economic and cultural – bringing increased opportunities and mobility for European citizens, but also giving rise to a new set of challenges and tensions.
We are moving towards promoting UK cultural relations in a more multilateral way with most of our projects involving partners from several countries.
Our key themes respond to the challenges Europe faces in becoming an increasingly open, creative, competitive and global player.

| Climate change is not only a global issue, but also a transversal one. The emission of greenhouse gasses is caused by all areas of human activity and it is clear that a significant reduction in carbon emissions can only be achieved through the efforts of all. What could be the role of the cultural sector? Do the arts have the capacity to raise public awareness about climate change? Can they warn the public for possible consequences? Should they incite the people to reduce their ecological footprint? And shouldn’t art institutions and artists also develop ecological working methods to produce, present and distribute art? |

The British Council is a partner of Maria Matos Theatre in The Two Degrees Conference: Art, Climate Change and Sustainable Development Friday 06 and Saturday 07 May - Maria Matos Theatre The United Nations Development Program puts forward a limit for global warming of 2ºC; surpassing this limit would have irreversible consequences for the conditions of life on Earth. Still, neither the UN Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen, nor the Cancun Summit, managed to provide for a workable agreement. If greenhouse gases continue to grow at the actual rhythm, all scientific models predict a raise in temperature of up to 4ºC until the end of the century. www.teatromariamatos.pt/pt/prog/conversas/2010-2011/doisgraus |

British Council contribution to ExperimentaDesign09 The British contribution to Timeless explores and expresses the idea of ‘place’ within ‘time’ through a series of commissions that are specific responses to Lisbon; its resources, identity and location.
The six selected designers share a sensibility towards their practice which reflects either a renewed recognition of local skills and vernacular typologies or encourages local engagement and joint civic action. The extent to which these ideas have penetrated design practice in the UK is reflected in the disciplines which the commissions represent; architecture, graphics, jewellery, interiors and furniture. |
