British Council in Europe
The Way Ahead

Europe is changing – and the British Council in Europe is changing with it.

British Council in Europe - The Way Ahead

An expanding European Union and a more interconnected Europe has brought down barriers – physical, political, economic and cultural – bringing increased opportunities and mobility for European citizens, but also giving rise to a new set of challenges and tensions.

We are moving towards promoting UK cultural relations in a more multilateral way with most of our projects involving partners from several countries.

Our key themes respond to the challenges Europe faces in becoming an increasingly open, creative, competitive and global player.

Some of our current projects and programmes

Intercultural dialogue
Migrant Integration Policy Index
Using over 130 policy indicators, this study creates a rich, multi-dimensional picture of migrants' opportunities to participate in European societies.
Our Shared Europe
Our Shared Europe works to strengthen the bonds of mutual knowledge and trust between Muslims and other majority and minority communities in Europe through the development of a series of initiatives.
Inclusion and Diversity in Education (INDIE)
Inclusion & Diversity in Education is a project that addresses the challenges migration presents to schools in Europe. Five schools in Portugal take part in the project.
Transatlantic Network 2020
Transatlantic Network 2020 works to strengthen ties between Europe and North America through the creation of a sustainable network of next generation leaders. Find out how to take part.

Creativity and knowledge
British Council contribution to ExperimentaDesign09
The British contribution to Timeless explores and expresses the idea of ‘place’ within ‘time’ through a series of commissions that are specific responses to Lisbon; its resources, identity and location.

The six selected designers share a sensibility towards their practice which reflects either a renewed recognition of local skills and vernacular typologies or encourages local engagement and joint civic action. The extent to which these ideas have penetrated design practice in the UK is reflected in the disciplines which the commissions represent; architecture, graphics, jewellery, interiors and furniture.
Cultural Leadership International (CLI)
The project is developing a new generation of cultural leaders. They will use skills and experience gained on the programme to better lead their organisations and inspire an open, tolerant and integrated society.

CLI will cultivate and support international partnerships and collaborations using UK cultural leadership expertise. The project will also generate opportunities for the international exchange of knowledge, experiences and ideas, and support people in fulfilling their potential and realising their aspirations.
BritLit
This project uses contemporary British literature as a language learning tool. Teachers have access to classroom materials, worksheets and projects and are offered the opportunity to work with contemporary British authors and poets.
Research Networks
The British Council co-funds and administers a series of research partnership programmes linking UK-based scientists with their opposite numbers in key countries across Europe.
Climate Change
Climate change is having an impact upon everyone and all sectors of society. Through strengthening networks and relationships among people, we are increasing understanding of the case for tackling climate change and championing implementation of international agreements that address the threats of climate change.
Darwin Now
DARWIN NOW is a global initiative celebrating the life and work of Charles Darwin and the impact his ideas about evolution continue to have on today’s world.  The British Council’s international programme of activities will mark the bicentenary of Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary since the publication of his landmark work On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection.
