Liverpudlian Dub Poet – Levi Tafari - in Porto

What do you ask a dub poet from Liverpool one Saturday morning in Porto? Well, students from the Young Learner First Certificate of English (Cambridge ESOL FCE) preparation classes in our centres in Breiner and Foz had plenty of questions for Levi Tafari, on tour in Portugal thanks to the British Council Brit Lit project. One question focussed on the hope Barack Obama’s election brought to the world, another on what characterises Levi. This world class poet was on top form, giving stirring performances of old favourites like Melanine, The First Woman in my Life and the Ozone Friendly Poem - covering universal themes of discrimination, social justice and environmental issues. A selection of his poems were studied in class prior to the live performance. However, seeing Levi in the flesh and hearing his mellow tones shape his work into three-dimensional art was something else. Here are a few responses from the audience:

I really enjoyed the presentation. I think it was a great way to connect with a different culture and also the finest manner to listen to poetry. - Maria

I loved the way he had such a marked rhythm when he spoke, just has if he had background music. - José Pedro

I think it was an amazing experience. I learnt a lot in just an hour and I really admire the way he got to me. I would love to get another opportunity to see him again. I was over the moon! - Inês

Our Young Learner courses range from primary school to secondary school and aim to develop students' confidence and command of spoken and written English within the structured framework of the Council of Europe. The courses are designed to consolidate and extend the English learnt at school

At each level, teachers use a variety of methods to ensure that lessons are both effective and enjoyable. In addition to following a course book, all students will be involved in different types of activities suitable for their age group. These include pair and group work, role-play, interactive language games, music and CD-Roms. Students also have access to library facilities.

Our Young Learner summer programme includes a UK option for children over the age of 10 and a Porto package for young learners of all age groups.

Courses for learners who are 6 and 7 years old have a maximum of 12 children in each.

PRIMARY SCHOOL (for students aged 8-11)

Our Primary school courses are topic-based and are designed to be communicative, motivating and fun. Our lessons focus on developing children's confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing through creative activities, language games, songs, stories and videos. Children may take Cambridge ESOL Young Learner Tests at the end of the year.

Our courses are divided into 3 levels from beginner/false beginners upwards and run once-a-week (3 hours) or twice-a-week (1.5 hours each lesson).

Maximum number of children per class: 16

SECONDARY SCHOOL (for students aged 12-17)

Our Secondary school courses offer students the chance to develop their language skills in English through a range of communicative and personalised topics and tasks. The lessons maximise and build on students’ grammatical knowledge and integrate strategies to enable them to develop greater learner autonomy.

Our courses integrate preparation for the Cambridge ESOL exams: KET, PET, FCE and CAE.

Our courses are divided into 8 levels from false beginners upwards, and run once-a-week (3 hours) or twice-a-week (1.5 hours each lesson).

Maximum number of students per class: 16
