Where
We run courses in our three centres

central Lisbon, Miraflores and Parede.

When
All courses are 90 hours long

3 hours once a week, or 1.5 hours twice a week
3 ten week terms October – December, January – March, March - June

Classes
Middle Years courses are for 10 to 12 year olds:

five levels from beginners to intermediate, M1 – M5
pupils grouped according to knowledge and ability to use the language

Our courses
We design our courses to meet the learning needs and styles of this particular age group. Our courses:

are theme-based
put a strong emphasis on cross curricular learning
provide tasks on engaging and varied topics
engage the children in working with realistic meaningful language
focus on developing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills
build the children’s ability to use English effectively in social and school situations

Approach and methodology
Our pupils participate actively in their learning. Our approach:

is pupil centred
puts a focus on educating the whole child
encourages and assesses the development of good learning skills
emphasises learning by doing

Our methodology involves:

children working on tasks and projects
work as a class, in groups, pairs, or by themselves
using  a variety of resources, including IT, films and literature to help children develop their English language skills

Assessment
Children are assessed on their work throughout the course.

each course has clearly defined objectives relating to learning skills and learning outcomes.
children are encouraged to take part in self and peer assessment at the end of each module of work.
parents receive reports on their child’s progress at the end of each term
we invite parents in each term to discuss their child’s learning.

Come and join us

Our academic year begins at the end of September but we hold placement tests throughout the year. Tests are valid for 12 months. The test fee is EUR 10.00 (non-refundable).

Registration is EUR 60.00

One term is 30 hours and the price is EUR 375.00 (various discounts are available). Classes in Lisbon on Saturday, starting before 1645, are EUR 395.00

International qualifications
Young learners of English (7 to 12 year olds) have the opportunity to take the University of Cambridge English language tests, Starters, Movers and Flyers (YLE). More information on our examinations pages.

The British Council Portal (opens in new window) gives all secondary and adult students access to their personal assessments and lesson summaries. To log on, all you need is your student number and your password, given to you by your teacher.

Parents/guardians can also view the lesson summaries and assessments of secondary students and all YL reports. To log on you’ll need your child’s student accountname/number (6nnnnnn or 7nnnnnn),  their password and an email account.

If you have any problems accessing the Portal please contact portal.customers@pt.britishcouncil.org quoting your student number.
