English Language for Juniors 6-10 year olds

Where
We have three centres in Lisbon - central Lisbon, Miraflores and Parede.

When
Classes are usually three hours per week, either twice a week for one and a half hours a lesson or once a week for three hours.
We have three main terms a year, each running for ten weeks. The first term begins in October.

Course content
We offer courses for 6 to 10 year olds. Younger pupils are grouped by age and older ones by age and ability.

Our pupils work with realistic, meaningful language and complete tasks on fun and relevant topics.

Tasks for younger students include singing songs, making mini - books or listening to and acting out stories. Older students may carry out a class survey, write a story or a description, or research a topic on the internet and make a poster presentation.

Approach and methodology
We help pupils feel comfortable expressing themselves in English and enable them to communicate effectively.

Lessons are pupil-centred and involve language and topics that are real and meaningful for children, tying in with their interests and their school studies.

Our students work in groups, pairs, or by themselves, depending on the requirements of the task.

Our students use a variety of resources, including IT, films and literature, and not just a course book to help them develop their English language skills.

Assessment
At our junior levels we aim to encourage good working habits as well as to develop children’s confidence in understanding and using English. Each level has clearly defined objectives relating to behaviour and learning.

Our students progress at their own rate and are assessed by their teacher in a number of ways throughout the course, including continuous assessment of tasks undertaken in class.

Our students are encouraged to take part in their own self-assessment at the end of each module of work.

We send reports to parents on their child’s progress at the end of each term and also invite parents in to discuss their child’s learning.

International qualifications

Young learners of English (7 to 12 year olds) have the opportunity to take the University of Cambridge English language tests, Starters, Movers and Flyers (YLE). More information on our exams pages.
