Welcome to the online version of In English, the online magazine published by the British Council in Portugal for teachers of English.

The magazine was originally launched in December 1979 under the name of the Newsletter. It then became the Journal, and in Autumn 2002 took on a new look and a new name - In English. Spring 2008 sees it undergo its latest transformation – from hardcopy to online magazine.

There are two main reasons for the transformation:

  • It’s more environmentally friendly – articles are available in pdf format (which will open in a new window), which can be read online, downloaded and filed away to be read at a later date, or printed off. This reduces paper used, and fuel in transporting copies around the globe.
  • We can reach a wider audience - In English, which started life as a joint venture with the Direcções Gerais do Ensino Básico e Ensino Secundário and is mainly directed at state school teachers of English, now has a readership from such diverse countries as Mozambique, UK and Peru, as well as its home, Portugal. Online access allows more teachers to enjoy the articles and try out the practical ideas.

In English will still be published twice a year - in the spring and the autumn, and articles from past issues will be available in the archive website.

We hope you enjoy the Spring 2008 issue. Earlier copies and many of the articles from The Journal can be found on our InEnglish Archive page.

Best Wishes,
