The British Council offers the following courses for teachers and teachers-in-training:

TKT Preparation Course

This short course prepares teachers for taking the internationally recognised Cambridge TKT. For further information, see www.cambridgeesol.org/tkt

Teacher Workshops

We offer a series of workshops for teachers and teachers-in-training at primary and secondary levels, across a range of topics. The emphasis is on practical ideas for teachers to be able to use and adapt for their own classes, supported by a review of methodology.

We can also offer tailor-made teacher-training workshops to be given at schools, (singly or as a series).  For more information about these, please contact:

Coimbra: 2009/10 - Teacher Development Sessions

Welcome to our Teacher Development Sessions in Coimbra. These workshops and training cover a variety of topics related to teaching English language, skills and classroom techniques.

All sessions are held in English and are designed to help Portuguese teachers of English in their schools but we welcome teachers of other languages too.
All sessions/workshops will take place on Saturday afternoons, 1430 – 1600.
Fee: EUR 10.00

Saturday 10 Oct Games and resources for primary teaching
A look at why we use games, suggestions for fuss-free games and some basic teacher resources ( repeat session)

Saturday  17 Oct Arts and crafts for primaries
This session will introduce more ideas for using Arts and Crafts in the primary classroom, with a special focus on activities for Halloween.Including a spooky story for the classroom ( Maximum 16 places)

Saturday 24 Oct Teaching very young leaners
This session will explore ways of teaching very young learners and suggest more classroom activities appropriate for this level of learner.

Saturday 07 Nov Teaching writing skills for primaries
Writing is often a neglected skill for primary students. This session will look at some simple ways of introducing writing skills from the beginning with the emphasis on practical classroom activities.

Saturday 14 Nov Teaching special needs : Dyslexia
What is dyslexia? How can we identify it?  How can we help students with dyslexia in the classroom? This session will focus on strategies to help students cope in the classroom.

An introduction to CLIL with some practical examples for using cross-curricular content in the classroom

Secondary sessions These will take place from 2.30 to 4.30 on Saturdays.
Saturday 07 Nov Games to enliven language classes
This session will give some ideas for adult / lower secondary learners to stimulate interest, consolidate learning or just to unwind at the end of the class.

Saturday  14 Nov Task-based learning
An overview of task-based learning and some practical activities to use in the classroom. This session is aimed at teachers of secondary students with an intermediate level of English.

Porto: 2008/09 - Teacher Development Sessions

We are running a series of teacher training workshops for teachers and teachers-in-training at primary and secondary levels. The emphasis is on practical ideas for teachers to be able to use with their own classes, coupled with recent developments in theory and methodology.
As places for each workshop are limited, we ask you to book your place in advance over the phone or by email. However, if you make a booking and then cannot attend, please cancel your reservation in order for others to attend in your place.

Fee EUR 10.00 per workshop. A certificate of attendance will be issued for each workshop attended.

24 January 2009 Writing sense from “nonsense”

For most students, the fact that all written work should be structured and in accurate English is a daunting task. Yet each person has the potential to be an artist and/or painter - we are both when we write.

In this workshop we will explore exciting practical ideas and ways to create 'stimulating conditions' for all before we start writing. As teachers we need to open up our students' creative thoughts first!

This workshop will provide an overview of how video games and virtual worlds can help your students learn better and we will explore the British Council’s LearnEnglish Second Life for Teens island and the language learning quests we have developed for it.

This workshop will explore this fascinating resource including looking at how you can use them to develop your students communicative skills and what problems they can present.

This workshop will utilise the lives of heroic figures as a source of creative and motivating activities for mixed skills lessons and project work with teenage or adult classes.
Saturday 06 June Cyber Well-being
Joe Pereira

A workshop that raises awareness of the issues surrounding safety online such as cyberbullying and safe surfing.
