Q
I have finished the 12th year. Do I have enough qualifications and are they the right ones to apply for the course that I want to study?

A
Students with Portuguese qualifications apply with all of the subjects and grades on their 12th year school certificate, which includes subjects and grades of the 10th, 11th and 12th years of education. You should confirm on the institutions’ web pages if the subjects you have studied are the ones demanded for the course you intend to study.

Q
I am in the 12th year. Are my qualifications enough and are they the right ones to apply for the area I want to study?

A
If you are still in the process of completing the 12th year, make your application with all of the subjects and respective grades of your 10th and 11th year and indicate on the application form all the subjects you are studying in your 12th year. You should confirm on the institutions’ web pages if the subjects that you have studied, and are currently studying, are the ones that are required for the course you wish to take.

Q
I haven't completed upper-secondary school. Can I apply for the course I wish to study with the qualifications I have?

A
For those candidates that are motivated but do not have the necessary requirements to apply for the 1st year, or whose grades are not good enough for the course they wish to study, or (if they are working) wish to take up their education again, there is always the possibility of attending a Foundation course or a Access/Bridging course. In general, these courses last a year and you should apply directly to the institution in question.

Find out more by reading the British Council Education information sheet 'Choosing your undergraduate foundation programme. Find out in what areas these courses are found and how to apply consulting our page on Access courses.

Q
I am currently studying in higher education in Portugal. Can I apply for the course I wish to study with the qualifications I have?

A
For example, students who are in the 1st or 2nd year at a Portuguese university or polytechnic should apply with the subjects and grades on their 12th year academic certificate and the subjects that they are currently studying. If the candidate has dropped out of the course, that fact will be mentioned and the reasons briefly outlined.

Q
I have completed a higher education course in Portugal. Can I apply for the course I wish to study with the qualifications I have?

A
If you have a Portuguese licenciatura, or bacharelato degree, you should apply with the subjects and classifications of this course, even if you wish to change the area you want to study. In this case you should mention the subjects and grades of your 12th year, if the institutions so wishes.

Q
Can I transfer to higher education in the United Kingdom?

A
It is up to the British institution to decide about which year of the course you should attend. You should contact each institution directly to explain your situation.

We would highlight that, for certain areas, certain institutions may require professional or volunteer experience. You should seek the information on the individual web pages of each institution.

Required knowledge of English

Q
Will I have to do an English exam?

A
The institutions may make a conditional offer for the course you wish to study, which will depend on achieving a minimum grade in an IELTS exam – International English Language Testing System, which take place once a month at the British Council. On our IELTS page you will find information regarding prices, dates and preparation courses. Find out about the level of English required by the institution for the course you wish to attend by consulting the respective web pages of the individual institution.
