Find out why the teaching centres are safe, high quality learning environments

Q
How can I be sure that the centre I wish to attend, or I wish my child to attend, offers a safe and quality learning environment?

A
Under the 'English in Britain Accreditation Scheme – EIBAS', the centres are regularly inspected by the British Council and must abide by strict standards of quality. The inspection covers areas such as general and academic management, teachers' qualifications, premises, academic resources, teaching, student support, supervision of young people, accommodation and free time.

Q
What is the British Council's accreditation scheme?

A
Via regular inspections and surprise checks the British Council in the UK guarantees the continuous quality of services of accredited centres. After each inspection a report about the services and premises is written from which the British Council decides if the teaching centre should be accredited.

Find out more by consulting the page 'Why choose an Accredited Centre' and the site 'EducationUK/English'.

Gain access to the complete and updated list of British Council-accredited schools

Q
I would like to check that a particular centre is accredited. Is there a list I can check?

A
You can access the complete and updated list of accredited centres by consulting the page 'A-Z list of Accredited centres'.

Choose an English course for young learners

Q
How do I choose a course for young learners?

A
On the page 'EducationUK/English' you can search for different types of English courses in the UK that are taught by British Council-accredited centres.

When searching you can specify the region, as well as the month you are interested in. In the 'keyword' option you can put, for example, 'Sports' or 'Art', which allows you to choose a course that combines English and a specific sport or type of artistic pursuit.

In general, apart from the classes, students can do a variety of activities during the day and young people are supervised 24 hours a day.

With regard to courses for young learners, the teaching centres offer accommodation in school residences or in family houses ('homestay'). Those families involved in the latter option are always carefully chosen by the teaching centre.

Choose an English course for adults

Q
How do I choose a course for adult learners?

A
On the page 'EducationUK/English' you can search for different types of English courses in the UK that are taught by British Council-accredited centres.

You can select 'General / Intensive English' for general or intensive courses, year-long courses or the 'Adult Vacation' option for holiday courses.

For other specialised courses, for example, in specific areas, you will find the following options:

  • One-to-One tuition
  • Business/Executives
  • Exam courses
  • Home Tuition courses
  • Academic Purposes-EAP*
  • Specific Purposes-ESP**
  • English Plus courses***
  • Courses for Teachers
  • Foundation / Access courses
  • Distance/online

*Academic Purposes-EAP – when choosing this option you can choose keywords like 'research' if you want to prepare for further study in the UK at research level, 'pre-master' if you want to prepare for a Master's degree in the future or 'postgraduate' for post-graduate studies, 'undergraduate' if you want to prepare for a British degree, 'pre-MBA', if you intend to study an MBA. You can also select 'Foundation / Access courses' for courses that prepare students for further studies at higher education level.

**Specific Purposes-ESP – when choosing this option, specify the area of the course you want to study, for example, 'Medicine' or Law'.

***English Plus courses – when choosing this course, indicate another keyword for the area of interest, for example, 'voluntary', 'professional experience', 'computing', 'design', 'photography', etc.

The centres offer a variety of accommodation: in halls of residence, in hotels, or in family ('homestay'). Those families involved in the latter option are always carefully chosen by the teaching centre.

Find out about how to enrol

Q
What do I have to do to enrol?

A
You can enrol by contacting the school directly via the respective e-mail address or via educational agents in Portugal, who work with or represent British Council-accredited schools.

After selecting the respective course on the 'EducationUK/English' page, you will find general information about it. To get more detailed information about courses and/or enrol online, please register on the page. Registration is free.

If you choose to enrol through an educational agent, you can obtain their contact detail via the list at the end of this page. An agent being on this list does not constitute a recommendation.

The most important thing is to ensure that the teaching centre you wish to study at is British Council-accredited.
