Cancel the Apocalypse The British Council is joining the Teatro Maria Matos in a series of debates, lectures and conferences on the theme of sustainable development, entitled Transition. The cycle will take place from March to July 2013. On 19 March, Andrew Simms, member of the New Economics Foundation (London), will come to Lisbon to present his new book, Cancel the Apocalypse, which was recently launched. Cancel the Apocalypse is a fascinating and iconoclastic book that demonstrates in detail how the relentless race for economic growth and excessive materialism are ruining the planet, without creating more happiness. After the presentation of his book, Andrew Simms will stay in Lisbon for a two-day seminar. |
Edinburgh World Writers' Conference 2012-2013 Presented by the Edinburgh International Book Festival and the British Council. The Conference is a unique series of events that will bring writers together around the world to create an historic picture of the role of literature today. The conversation began at the Edinburgh International Book Festival where 50 world renowned writers gathered to discuss the five topics that almost brought writers to blows during the infamous Writers’ Conference of 1962. The World Writers’ Conference will visit 15 different cities over the year giving writers in different countries the chance to add their voice to the growing debate. The Edinburgh World Writers Conference in Lisbon will take place on 25 May 2013, with the support of the British Council Portugal, European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) and APEL (Association of Editors and Publishers in Portugal) Two conference themes will be debated. Portuguese author José Rodrigues dos Santos will present the debate on "Should Literature be Political?". The theme "The Future of the Novel" will be presented by a Scottish writer. Portuguese and international writers will be invited to be part of a live audience at the Lisbon Book Fair auditorium. The sessions will be streamed live on on the sites of the Edinburgh World Writers Conference, the Feira de Livro de Lisboa, and the British Council Portugal. Watch this space for more information as it becomes available. To get a flavour of Edinburgh and a glimpse of the Conference, watch this RTP report. |
