Teaching Knowledge Test
available in paper-based and computer-based versions

The Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) tests knowledge about the teaching of English to speakers of other languages.

TKT focuses on:

  • different ways of teaching;
  • the language of teaching;
  • how resources can be used;
  • the key elements of lesson planning;
  • classroom management methods for different needs.

To sit TKT teachers need a level of English at least equivalent to level B1 of the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Candidates do not need to have taken any English language examinations.

what does TKT exam look like?

The test consists of the following three written modules:

  • Module 1 - Language and background to language learning and teaching.
  • Module 2 - Planning lessons and use of resources for language teaching.
  • Module 3 - Managing the teaching and learning process.
  • Module KAL* - Knowledge About Language.
  • Module CLIL* - Content and Language Integrated Learning.

For each module there is a test of 80 questions which lasts 1 hour 20 min. The first three modules can be taken:

  • all together at the same time
  • separately - each at a different date over a period of time
  • any two together and a third one separately

Candidates may not repeat a module within 4 months at any centre.

* Two optional modules of TKT: KAL and CLIL can be added to the three core modules, or can each be taken completely independently.

where and when can i sit TKT?

TKT can be taken at all British Council Examination Centres in Poland.

what grades are there?

Each module is free-standing, and there is no aggregate score. Candidates receive a certificate for each module they take. Results are available 4 weeks after the session.
Each question carries one mark, so the maximum mark for each module is 80. Candidate performance is reported using the following four bands:

BAND A candidate at this level demonstrates:

how to prepare for TKT?

Many teachers will follow a preparation course before taking the test but they can also prepare themselves through their own reading and study, if they prefer.
Cambridge University Press in co-operation with Cambridge ESOL have published The TKT Course by M. Spratt, A. Pulverness, M. Williams, which can be useful in preparing for TKT.
