British Council Poland
Our library move – frequently asked questions
Why are you moving the British Council library?
In all the British Council's operations globally we are changing the way we work, focusing on developing co-operations with partner institutions in order to reach larger number of audiences. Therefore, we have decided to continue offering our library services in co-operation with one of public libraries in Warsaw.
Does it mean that the British Council library will be closed?

The library will be moved and run in co-operation with Biblioteka Publiczna w Dzielnicy Praga Południe at Meissnera 5 in Warsaw and will become a part of their Library of Foreign Language Books. It is the largest library of this type in Warsaw. We are already running partner libraries in eight cities in Poland.

Why have you chosen to co-operate with this particular library?

Biblioteka Publiczna w Dzielnicy Praga Południe is a state-of-the-art library offering the largest collection of foreign language books in Warsaw. The library specialises in providing resources in foreign languages. It delivers modern library services and is active in organising cultural events. As a result of our partnership with the library you will be able to gain access not only to English language resources but also to a wide range of materials in French, German, Russian, Spanish and Italian.

Biblioteka Publiczna w Dzielnicy Praga Południe acommodates a state-of-the-art Reading Room comprising of press reading room, Library of Foreign Language Books and Audiobook Library for Blind and Partially-Sighted people. There are 70 reading tables featuring power outlets for notebooks and a facility that reads out loud printed texts. It is one of a few public libraries in Warsaw to offer Internet access to people with visual impairments.

What if the membership expires after 30 July 2008?

Our library members may either choose to receive a reimbursement or to retain access to electronic resources (Athens) till the end of December 2008.

- Reimbursement

In order to receive the reimbursement, library members will be asked to fill in the Refund Form (available at the British Council Reception desk or here) and return the original, personally or by post, to the British Council by 31 August 2008.

The rates of the reimbursement are as follows:

  • 12-month teacher membership:3,00 PLN per every unused week
  • 12-month standard membership:2,70 PLN per every unused week
  • 12-month associate membership:2,30 PLN per every unused week

If library members are claiming reimbursement for a part of a week, the amount will be rounded up to a full week.

Please note that it is necessary to return all items that have been checked out to the library. We reserve the right not to process the library members’ reimbursement claims should they fail to do so.

The library members will be authorized to access Athens electronic resources until the expiry date on their membership cards.

- Access to electronic resources (Athens) till the end of December 2008

Opting for access to Athens entails a waiver of the refund library members would otherwise be entitled to receive.

Please note that it is necessary to return all items that have been checked out to the library. We reserve the right to cancel the library members’ access to Athens should they fail to do so.

Important:

Library members who will not have chosen their preferred option by 31 August, will automatically receive access to Athens electronic resources until 31 December 2008.
