  • ILEC - The International Legal English Certificate - a Cambridge ESOL product

  • TOLES - The Test of Legal English Skills - a Global Legal English product

The International Legal English Certificate (ILEC) and Test of Legal English Skills (TOLES) test the English language skills required by the legal profession and sectors related to law. They test the following skills:

  • knowledge and use of vocabulary relevant in the global commercial market;
  • writing formal letters and communicating by email;
  • the ability to follow a course of legal study where the instruction is in English;
  • reading and writing complex law documentation;
  • the language of negotiating (TOLES only);
  • grammatical accuracy (TOLES only).

What do Legal english exams look like?

ILEC consists of four parts:

  • Reading - 1 hour 15 minutes, 6 tasks with 54 questions;
  • Writing - 1 hour 15 minutes, 2 tasks;
  • Listening – 40 minutes, 4 tasks with 30 questions;
  • Speaking – 16 minutes, 4 tasks.

TOLES is offered at three different levels:

  • TOLES Foundation (A2-B1 Council of Europe levels): Reading & Writing - 1hour 30 minutes;
  • TOLES Higher (B1-B2  Council of Europe levels):  Reading & Writing – 1hour 30 minutes, Listening – 30 minutes;
  • TOLES Advanced (B2-C2 Council of Europe levels) – Reading & Writing - 2 hours.
When and where can i sit legal english exams?

You can take  the ILEC exam at the British Council in Warsaw and Krakow. TOLES is organized in 21 examination centres in Poland.

What are the legal english exams' fees?

How do I register?

In order to register for ILEC and TOLES you should:

1. Read the Regulations carefully.

2. Fill in the Entry Form for the chosen exam and pay the exam fee.

You can collect the necessary registration documents at the British Council office in Warsaw. We can also send you the documents by post. In this case please contact us early in advance in order to meet the registration deadline.

3. Submit an Entry Form and receipt to the British Council office by the date specified below:

  • in person or by post to the following address:

Before sending your documents please make sure that:

  • your entry documentation is complete and signed;
  • you have chosen a date and centre for your exam;
  • you have chosen the way of receiving a certificate;
  • you have attached a proof of payment.

Entries received after the deadline as well as incomplete ones will not be accepted. Candidates who sent their registration documents by post, fax or e-mail receive a confirmation that their entries have reached the British Council Examinations Services. The confirmation is sent by e-mail within 2 working days of receipt of the documents.

Information about the venue and time of the exam will be sent to candidates by e-mail approximately 2 weeks before the test date.

On the day of the exam bring a receipt, an identity document (ID or passport), a pen, pencil and eraser.

what grades are there?

ILEC

Results are available ca 9 weeks after the exam on http://www.cambridgeesol-results.org. Candidates receive from British Council instructions how they can check their results. The Statement of Results shows the candidate’s performance on each of the four papers and an overall grade. Those who achieve pass grades will receive an official certificate awarded by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. Certificates can be obtained in the following way:

  • in person at the British Council in Warsaw
  • by registered mail (PLEASE NOTE: in the case of the loss of a certificate the University of Cambridge will not issue a duplicate)
  • by courier (at the candidate’s expense)

ILEC exam grades:

Passing grades

  • Pass with Merit C1 English at advanced level (CAE level) - 80 - 100%
  • Pass C1 English at advanced level (CAE level) - 70 - 79 %
  • Pass B2 English at intermediate level (FCE level) - 50 - 69 %

Failing grades

  • Narrow Fail -  45 - 49 %
  • Fail - 0  - 44 %

TOLES

Results are available ca 6 weeks after the exam. Certificates can be obtained in the following way:

  • in person at the British Council in Warsaw
  • by registered mail (in the case of the loss of a certificate the candidate covers the cost of issuing a duplicate)
  • by courier (at the candidate’s expense)

TOLES Foundation and TOLES Higher grades:

There are four grade bands. Candidate’s results are expressed as a percentage score.

81-100 This candidate has EXCELLENT legal English skills at the chosen level
61-80                                    This candidate has VERY GOOD legal English skills at the chosen level
41-60 This candidate has SATISFACTORY legal English skills at the chosen level
0-40 This candidate DOES NOT YET POSSESS legal English skills at the chosen level

TOLES Advanced grades:

The examination provides a series of six progressively graded results, which are designed to comment exclusively upon legal professionals whose first language is not English. They move from a very low level of proficiency (GREEN 0-100) up to an advanced level of proficiency which approaches native-level ability (GOLD 451-500).

how to prepare for legal english exams?

A preparation course is not a requirement for candidates who want to register for ILEC and TOLES.  However, it is recommended that candidates have some practice in law (are familiar with law) or attend a legal English preparation course.

How to apply for invoices and REIMBURSEMENTS?

If you want to receive an invoice for your exam payment, fill in one of the forms below:

The British Council is not a payer of VAT.

REIMBURSEMENTS

Candidates who have paid for an exam, but did not register are entitled to a full refund. They should fill in a Refund Form and submit it to the British Council Examination Services.

Candidate who were not able to take part in the exam because of health reasons you are entitled to:

  • TOLES - transfer to the next convenient exam date. The basis for the transfer is a medical certificate signed by a doctor and submitted to the below address within 5 working days of the exam.
  • ILEC - a 60% refund of the basic examination fee. The basis for the refund is a medical certificate signed by your doctor and submitted no later than 26 May 2008 for the May session and 1 December 2008 for the November session to the address below .

The Council of Europe Common European Framework of Reference is intended to describe the criteria of language knowledge and skills of language learners across Europe. Please find below a comparison of ILEC and TOLES with the Council of Europe global scale levels.

Break-through
Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
A2

Waystage
Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.
B1

Threshold
Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
B2

Vantage
Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue, giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
C1

Effective Proficiency
Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
C2

Mastery
Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.
