The Examination Centre in Katowice is located in the very heart of the Silesian University campus, close to the Rawa river. This inconspicuous-looking river has given  its name to a music festival called the Rawa Blues Festival, well known  to all blues fans. Not far from the centre  is also the highest and the most modern  building in Katowice - ALTUS. Our location in the dynamic and exuberant university centre ensures  that our colleagues do their best to provide the highest quality service through the use of modern EFL teaching methods.

The Katowice Exam Centre is run by The University of Silesia English Language Centre. The ELC offers courses in general English at all levels and has recently added very popular legal English classes for students of law and practicing lawyers, something new on our market.  

ELC students have access to an English literature library where they can borrow simplified and full versions of contemporary English novels as well as classic prose. The works of Doris Lessing, this year’s Nobel prize winner are also available. The ELC in Katowice has also had the pleasure of being the incubator for several budding romances that have developed into long-term relationships.

The ‘artistic ambiance‘ of the Rawa river must have influenced ELC staff as some of them publish their poems and give concerts in classical repertoire. Others are keen on good literature, film and art in general.

The exam Co-ordinator, Maryla Gałązka has interests matching her surname.  She looks after pheasants, hedgehogs, fish and wild cats and she spends her weekends close to nature.  This is the best way to recuperate after a week of hard work, especially when some exam-related events can be really nerve racking.

Our most unusual recollection occurred during the time when an FCE written session was taking place in Spodek (‘the saucer’). Suddenly, at midday sharp, all the candidates heard a piece of music, which was the soundtrack from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The sound sent shivers down our spines. Were we about to depart into outer space?
