	The International Young Music Entrepreneur (IYME) Award 2009

The British Council and the British Embassy invite young Polish music entrepreneurs to take part in the International Young Music Entrepreneur 2009 Award. The goal of the award is to honour individual achievement and support the potential of young entrepreneurs working in the music sector.

Artistic talent will not be factored into the judging procedure – a finalist will be judged solely on the merit of their entrepreneurial abilities in the industry.

"Thanks to the long UK tour of almost two weeks I am now able to view the Polish music market and my own activity as a music entrepreneur from an entirely different perspective. During the tour we were given the opportunity to meet representatives of the greatest record labels, music producers and managers, as well as business advisors, draw on their knowledge and experience and establish professional relationships with them. These meetings made me realize what a long way the Polish music sector still has to go. It was also extremely helpful to confront and network with finalists of the competition from other countries. In fact, I maintain contact with most of them, and recently I have organized a concert by the Estonian winner of the competition: Vaiko Epik.”

"The IYME Award for young music entrepreneurs organised by the British Council, the Polish finals of which I had the honour to win in 2007, is an absolutely unique experience. For two weeks, together with nine other finalists from all over the world, we got to know the ins and outs of this huge machinery which is the British music industry: from small labels, through platforms for independent artists, to gigantic record companies and festivals such as Glastonbury. It was a quick lesson of humbleness and a perfect opportunity to learn from the best in the sector. Today I try to apply that experience as best as I can in my team – IncarNations – which is responsible for the production of the latest record by Kapela ze Wsi Warszawa. And needless to say, I have drawn inspiration for my work from my IYME experience."

		ABOUT THE COMPETITION

The International Young Music Entrepreneur (IYME) Award opens this year’s series of British Council competitions for young creative entrepreneurs. In 2009 competitors from the following 8 emerging economies will participate in the IYME: China, India, Kenya, Latin America, Lithuania, Malaysia, Nigeria and Poland.

The IYME competition consists of two stages: the selection process in Poland and the world finals in the UK. In the Polish stage of the selection process a professional jury will select the best young entrepreneur / manager in the Polish music industry who will then compete for the title of International Young Music Entrepreneur of the Year 2009 in the world’s finals in the UK.

The IYCE awards are unique in rewarding entrepreneurial ability. A finalist may be active in the creative process as a musician or DJ, but this should be secondary to their focus as an entrepreneur in the promotion of their creative sector in their own country. Artistic talent will not be factored into the judging procedure – a finalist will be judged solely on the merit of their entrepreneurial abilities in the industry.

		PRIZE

Polish stage

The winners of the Polish finals will win:

First prize - Casio Exilim EX-S10 digital camera with YouTube movie mode and computer accessories by Vector Digital
Two additional prizes - computer accessories by Vector Digital

International stage

The winner of the world finals will win the title of International Young Music Entrepreneur of the Year 2009, as well as a financial award (value approx. Ł5000) which will be used for a professional project whose nature will be agreed with the local British Council office. The aim of the Competition is to build relations between the winning country and the UK.

The financial prize is not the only benefit. There will be a several day tour of the UK music industry, comprising visits, meetings, seminars and live concerts and events where the ten finalists will be able to meet key leaders, institutions, companies, etc. within the sector. The finalists will visit London and another UK city important to the music industry (Manchester). They will also take part in the Great Escape conference and festival in Brighton

		WHO CAN APPLY

Candidates must:

be aged between 25 and 35
be a Polish citizen; proof of citizenship must be presented upon the Organiser’s request
already work in the music sector (as defined below)
be entrepreneurial and have shown their ability in the promotion of music in their country, particularly in a commercial context
through their character, drive and abilities, demonstrate their potential to be a future leader of the sector in their country
be fluent in English
be able to travel to the UK in May 2009 (if they win the Polish stage of the Competition).

		DEFINITION OF THE MUSIC SECTOR

Candidates must already be active professionally in the local music sector, i.e.:

record companies; Artists & Repertoire (A&R); producing, recording, engineering; music licensing, and distribution
venue and/or festival programming and management
artists management and agents
music broadcasting
music journalism and publishing
music development & management
music marketing; public and media relations
music retail; online (including digital) and high street outlets
consultants providing specialist services in any of the areas outlined.
