BRIT CULT FESTIVAL

November - December 2011
Gdańsk

The exhibition of Gilbert & George has become a pretext to present British culture in a slightly wider context. In order to achieve it, we have decided to organise BRIT CULT FESTIVAL in November and December 2011 in Gdańsk. Through a series of cultural events accompanying the exhibition we aim to show the most interesting phenomena of contemporary art and British culture, focus on its language, current trends, tendencies, and directions. Our goal is to present the art of established artists as well as the immense potential of the young generation. We would make an attempt at bringing Polish public closer to British arts.

The festival is mainly about getting to know British arts, culture, identity, nature of the nation and investigating if the cliché, sometimes caricature-like image of a typical Brit is anywhere near the reality. Gilbert & George approach the subject with deadly seriousness and humour but at the same time they are sympathetic and thoughtful. Concentrating on the symbols, traditions, national icons – and through juggling with forms and conventions – they make the viewers think deeply about the human nature and philosophy of life. We would like to follow these tracks, or even go one step further, and have a closer look at contemporary British culture, explore visual arts, music and film – often in reference or comparison to art of Gilbert & George.

Organised by Łaźnia Centre for Contemporary Art in Gdańsk and the British Council

The economic crisis in Europe makes it difficult to predict the future, let alone plan it. So what does this mean for architects? Should they seek to put forward a bold vision of the future, despite current uncertainties? Or should they improvise with and adapt existing 20th century architecture? Will new social movements bring about new forms of spatial organisation, and if so what role can architects play?

Spoken Word Stage at Free Form Festival

Spoken Word is about the author and the text. Spoken Word is about the direct confrontation between the artist and the audience. Spoken word is about poetry. In Poland Spoken Word made its first appearance on Poetry Slams – a mix of poetry and performance, an open competition during which the audience chooses the best poet/performer of the night. Spoken Word is a western phenomenon which came to refresh the literature scene and to make our poetry nights more vibrant. This year FreeFormFestival has decided to follow in the footsteps of all big festivals from the UK or USA and to organize the first Spoken Word stage at a music festival in Poland !

During the festival on the Spoken Word stage you will be able to see: Harry Baker, Deborah Stevenson, Kamila Janiak, Mateusz Andała, Weronika Lewandowska, Grzegorz Bruszewski and Roman Boryczko

British Council is the Spoken Word Stage Partner and Coordinator.

The Generation in Transition exhibition presents the artworks of a young generation of artists of Indian origin, living and working in India, as well as in America and Europe. It is the first extensive showcase of contemporary art from this region presented in Central Europe in recent years. For about twenty years now, India has been experiencing an enormous economic and technological development, which has had a substantial impact on social structures. This change, with its positive and negative aspects, is frequently reflected in the works of contemporary artists, especially in those of the youngest ones who have grown up in these interesting times of transition.

Artists invited to participate in the exhibition: Jaishri Abichandani, Prayas Abhinav, Ravi Agarwal, Ashish Avikunthak, Sarnath Banerjee, Devendra Banhart, Ansuman Biswas & Jem Finer, Nikhil Chopra, Baptist Coelho, Shezad Dawood, Rohini Devasher, Gauri Gill, Shilpa Gupta, Tushar Joag, Vishwas Kulkarni, Swati Khurana, Anay Mann, Rakhi Peswani, Prajakta Potnis, Prasad Raghavan, Gitanjali Rao, Akshay Rathore, Malik Sajad, Sharmila Samant, Mithu Sen, Charmi Gada Shah, Tejal Shah, Yashas Shetty, Bharat Sikka, Janek Simon, Praneet Soi, Kiran Subbaiah, Anup Mathew Thomas, Navin Thomas, Nandini Valli Muthiah

Following its presentation in Zachęta, the exhibition is be shown in the Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius.

Forced Entertainment

British collective based in Sheffield, founded in 1984 the group has maintained a six way partnership for nearly thirty years under the artistic direction of Tim Etchells, is a group of artistic daredevils, capable of anything. Their rich output, besides theatre productions, features exhibitions, video art, installations, books, even an artistic guided bus tour. The collective has travelled the whole world with their productions and played at nearly all the major theatre festivals.

Out of their projects so far there emerges a picture of an unusual, ingenious group which in their artistic activities always takes into account needs and expectations of their audience. As they themselves write about their work: ”[it] is always a kind of conversation or negotiation. We’re interested in making performances that excite, frustrate, challenge, question and entertain’”. They are especially interested in the mechanism of theatre performance itself, the role of audience, the machinations of contemporary urban life. Their achievements place them in the top rank of the contemporary theatre avant-garde, not only in Britain, but worldwide.

Quizoola!
Friday, October 7, 18:00 (360')
Bunkier Sztuki
Szczepański Sq. 3a
Language: English

„Quizoola!” is a “near-unclassifiable” performance, which has been shown around the world over the last 15 years. Six-hour-long presentation allows the audience members to leave any time, and come back later if they feel like it. But, as the director Tim Etchells recollects, “As performers, we’ve all seen audience members who have picked up their coats and are trying to leave, but it takes them 40 minutes to get out the door because they keep thinking, ‘I just want to hear the answer to the next question’.” The basis of the show consists of two thousand questions and answers. The list of questions includes the most simple (“Are you a natural blonde?”) as well as philosophical ones, requiring reflection (“What are trees?”). There are also humorous questions (“Do you think people have sexual fantasies about John McCain and Sarah Palin?”), as well as very personal (“Have you ever killed someone?”), and intimate (“Do you love me?”) The answers to these questions are improvised on the spot leaving the audience guessing whether they are sincere.

The Thrill of It All
Sunday, October 9, 18:00 (120')
Laznia Nowa Theatre
os. Szkolne 25
Language: English + Polish subtitles

Forced Entertainment’s spectacular production is a peculiarly grotesque vaudeville, unpredictable and perverse. It seems to be a sure failure from the start: it is noisy, full of seeming imperfections, performed by a consistently shoddily dressed bunch of mediocrities. Apparently it should not be able to arouse interest. However, the performers’ exertions and the banal aesthetics contain strangely moving elements, winning the audience. A large amount of humour, resulting from the divergence between the characters’ intent and the effect of their efforts, plays an equally important part here.

The show disintegrates before our eyes and every comic trick seems to enforce the first impression. However, the chaotic structure of the play is irresistibly entertaining, incessantly laying bare its own theatricality. “The Thrill…” builds its strength on theatrical shoddiness, a strength that grants one a truly unforgettable evening, during which “the reckless Forced Entertainment beat theatre to smithereens.”

Post-War Modernism in Africa: Its Architecture, Planning and Architectural Influences

Ola Uduku (Edinburgh College of Art  Edinburgh/ School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture University of Edinburgh )

introduction: Łukasz Stanek (ETH Zurich)

16 May (monday) 2011,. 19.00

Following the move to national ‘independence’ in Africa at the end of World War Two, a new post war period of economic prosperity resulted in the evolution of new Modernist Architecture and Planning schemes being built across West Africa, where Ghana become the first sub-Saharan country to attain independence in 1957. These projects included school building  programmes, University campuses, and notable modernist office and residential buildings designed and built with the involvement of an international group of Architects, many from the UK, but also with others from as far afield as Eastern Europe and Australia. This talk discusses this postwar architectural climate and focuses specifically on the under-reported influence of Eastern European architects and planners in the 1947 – 1970s “Modernist” Period in West Africa.

Forward Motion ‘Intros’ – dance screen and meeting with Liz Aggiss

28 March 2011,  6 p.m.

Teatr Wielki - Opera Narodowa in Warsaw and the British Council invite you to "Intros" -  films being the first part of a dance on screen series Forward Motion.

Forward Motion, a British Council project co-produced with South East Dance, creates a moving snapshot of Britain’s prolific screen dance industry.  It celebrates British screen dance talent and aims to engage new artists, markets, audiences and participants in this exciting niche art form. Forward Motion is a collection of outstanding British screen dance works curated by experts and presenting interviews with artists and dance movies.

Polarbear at the 8th anniversary of Slam poetry in Poland

Poetry Slam has become a regular part of Poland's cultural landscape and this year we are celebrating its 8th birthday. The first poetry Slam was organised by Bohdan Piasecki and it took place in Warsaw's own Stara Prochoffnia. Slam is a combination of poetry and performance, which puts emphasis on the relationship between the poet and his audience. Slam is also an event, during which artists present their own texts and the audience rates their texts as well as their performance and oratory skills and by the end of the night chooses the winner.

Thanks to the cooperation with the British Council this year's birthday will be honoured by the presence of Birmingham's own Polarbear - one of the key personas on the spoken word scene today. He will perform in Warsaw at the Powiększenie Club during the anniversary slam and the day after  will deliver an open lecture on "Spoken Word - Writing for your own voice" at SWPS in Warsaw.

From Warsaw he will travel to Cracow where he will take part in a talk on Slam poetry and the spoken word and take part in the poetry Slam in Kazimierz at Kolanko No 6 Club.

Polarbear is not a bear at all, but a Brummie, raised on hip-hop and Arthur Scargill, who writes stories and sometimes talks them on stage. He came to national prominence as part of Apples & Snakes’ Exposed tour and through touring the summer festivals. His work has featured on BBC Radio 1, 3, 4 and 6 and he has performed around the world from Kuala Lumpur to California. He leads writing and performance projects nationally and internationally. His first feature length performance story, ‘If I cover my nose you can’t see me’ toured nationally in 2008/09 and closed the London Literature Festival.

Dan Holdsworth "Blackout"

Photo exhibition by Dan Holdsworth entitled “Blackout” in the Photo Gallery pf, in Poznan’s “Zamek” Culture Centre is the first ever presentation of works by this British photographer in Poland. The “Blackout” series consists of large format landscape arts, showing the volcanic landscape of Iceland in negative. Choosing photo negatives as the final way of presentation is not accidental. The tonal reversal of the image strengthens the symbolic aspect of the photo, triggering its journey toward the unreal. Thanks to the technique of negative, the pictures taken by Holdsworth during the day resemble night scenes or even lunar landscapes. Moreover, enlarging the photo negative lets us direct our attention to the technological aspect of photography as a medium and the magical aspects of the traditional photographic processes. The “Blackout” series seems to fluctuate between the real and the magical, the possible and fantastic, and the “desolate” photos radiate with a huge amounts of emotion.

The exhibition was organized thanks to  cooperation with the British Council.

Mark Power - meet the photographer

British Council and Lablab Foundation is pleased to invite you to a meeting with Mark Power - a photographer represented by Magnum Photos, the most prestigious photo agency in the world. Mark Power is the author of acclaimed photo series dedicated to contemporary Poland The Sound of Two Songs.

Mark Power is one of the most important contemporary documentary photographers; he is also an important ambassador of British culture in Poland, and a bond for the photographic tradition of both countries. Both The Sound of Two Songs, released in 2010 in a book published by Photoworks, and the exhibition that premiered during Photomonth in Krakow 2010, were internationally applauded events. Mark Power is one of the few foreign photographers who so widely depicts contemporary Poland, exploring it to Poles themselves. The dialogue between the foreigner and the country he discovers gives unusual effects. Very contemporary images presented in a classical form allowed for documenting changes that occurred in Poland over the years.  It is very valuable that these changes were primarily seen by someone from the outside, with an extensive experience as an observer and a beautiful professional career.

The meeting organized by British Council, Lablab Foundation and Yours Gallery Foundation is an excellent opportunity to present the artist and his works to the audience. This meeting, promoting The Sound of Two Songs,  will be the first opportunity to see this project in Warsaw as well as possibility to buy the album.

Mark Power is represented in Poland by ZPAF i SKA Gallery.

THEME: HOW TO SURVIVE?

Eco-friendly design bound with recycling methods is nowadays strong tendency in global product making. It is hard to avoid questions of shrinking natural resources, raising consumerism and programmed insolidity of contemporary products when being in a position of a designer or product manager today. We live in a circle of buying, using, collecting, disposing and sharing of consumer products. The XXI – century man is virtually sinking in the amount of produced, collected and used objects. We are rarely aware of a process that every product has to go through before getting into our hands. Terms „recycling“ and „sustainability“ made their way through global consciousness becoming a trend and a real motivation for reaching viable solutions in many fields of life. This process can be summed up with a question: how to survive? After four-year struggle related to organizing RECYLES event we can easily position ourselves on the radical other end of the rainbow towards mass production. We are promoting totally different approach to the product by supporting D.I.Y. idea and by endorsing unique design solutions.

This year we are willing to go one step further by asking the artists a provocative question: HOW TO SURVIVE?

This year‘s fifth edition of the RECYCLES festival will have an international rank.

Organizers with the support of the British Council invited to Warsaw artists from the United Kingdom, who together with Polish designers will ‘recycle‘ during the festival. Among the invited guests are: El Ultimo GRITO/EUG Studio and Tom Price.

Within frameworks of RECYCLES 5 a workshop will be created by students of Royal College of Art in cooperation with students of Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts Faculty of Design (PG13 Group).

Same as in previous years we will award the best ideas as RECYCLE OF THE YEAR in two categories – recycled during the festival and recycled before.

Enemies of the People

UK 2009, 94' dir Rob Lemkin, Thet Sambath

Saturday 4.12 4.30 PM Laboratorium CSW Meeting with the authors after the screening

Sunday 5.12 8.00 PM Muranów Cinema Meeting with the authors after the screening

Thet Sambath, the film’s protagonist and co-director, devoted more than a dozen years of his life to exposing the truth about genocide by the Khmer Rouge. Western historians have documented the actions of Pol Pot’s governments, but Cambodia has been enshrouded in silence about the horrors of 1975–79. Unable to come to terms with the secrecy surrounding the death of his dear ones, Sambath decided to extract the truth about the Killing Fields from those who gave the orders, and those who carried them out. He painstakingly worked to find the people who most likely murdered members of his family. The scenes where executioners demonstrate the actual killings are unforgettable. Sambath also found one of the last living Khmer Rouge leaders, Nuon Chea, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kampuchea, so-called “Brother No. 2” (number one was reserved for Pol Pot). Aware that he must first gain his trust, the filmmaker befriends this elderly though slightly apodictic old man to lay the groundwork for his decisive interview. The film revolves around the special patriarchal relationship that develops between the two men. After years of working up the strength to ask the final question, Sambath ultimately begins to doubt the sense of his mission, for which he often sacrificed time with his family and career.

Munch Munch (Richard Manber, Thomas Carrell, Jack O'Connor, Sarah Louise Renwick) is the group of young and talented people. They started their career very early for while  still  students at Bristol University they had already played 8 applauded concerts at SXSW in Austin, Texas, called the king of showcase festivals. They have also shared the stage with  world famous alternative bands such as the Dirty Projectors, Hot Chip, No Age, Abe Vigoda, Late Of A Pier and Mount Kimbie. On the 14th of November this British band had their first record – “Double Visions” released by the prestigious company Upset The Rhythm.

Munch Munch’s music is a combination of power pop and experimental music. It is nothing else but creative compositions enriched with an orchestra’s melody, colourful explosions of sounds and energetic twists of tempo and action. Their music has been evolving from the day the band was created, which was in 2006. At first it was quite chaotic development since the music grew up along with its creators. Yet, “Double Visions” is a completely considered work. It took the artists over 6 months to compose all the pieces, first being played on the piano and only then arranged for a group of various instruments such as drums, Farfi’s keyboard, the organs of Hammond, vibraphone, marimba and analogue synthesizer. Munch Munch is coming to Poland with all those instruments.

Munch Munch is also famous for their energetic and dynamic performances. On the stage members of the band exchange instruments and often simply improvise. At both of their concerts in Poland they will be supported by the Polish visual artist Robert Bęza, who is responsible for terrifying visualizations during the concerts of Paris Tetris.

Their Warsaw performance will be broadcasted live on www.from-stage.com.

Warsaw Under Construction II

Architecture Festival
Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw
October 1 - 31, 2010
Grand Opening:
October 2 (Saturday), 19:00

“Warsaw under construction II” is a programme of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, devoted to broadly understood design. It was launched in autumn 2009 within the framework of Warsaw’s candidacy for the title of the European Capital of Culture 2016. The first edition of WUC came as a “trailer” of the festival, exploring various fields of design – from graphic design and typography, through industrial and social design to macro-scale urban planning. For two months the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and several satellite venues (including the furniture pavilion Emilia, neighbouring the museum’s temporary seat) hosted lectures, exhibitions, urban space projects, workshops and conferences. There was a special focus on consultations with specialists in various domains (sociologists, journalists, officials, architects, NGO activists, etc.) as well as participation of the inhabitants of Warsaw, who presented their own visions of change in the city within the cycle “Proposals Department”.

This year’s edition of the WUC Festival is held throughout October 2010 and preserves the form of a varied programme of debates, exhibitions and social events, embracing manifold aspects of design that involves inhabitants, groups, collectives, organisations and institutions into the process of planning and reorganising urban space in Warsaw. Recently there is an easily discernible trend pertaining to grassroots, extra-official initiation of urban changes as well as an increase in the pool of available “scenarios” of using public space by the inhabitants. NGOs, public institutions and informal collectives are strengthening their presence in the debate on the shape of Warsaw, e.g. by forming alliances for the sake of protection of the architectural heritage of modernism or by establishing alternative cultural hubs: club-cafés, galleries or independent educational centres.

The UK involvement involves lectures, sessions and installations:

  • "Pleasure" - site specific installations by three architectural ateliers from London: Common Office, Dallas Pierce Quintero and Office for Subversive Architecture on one of Warsaw's key problems – unfriendly, overwhelming and under-designed public space.
  • „City Destroyed by Cash” by Damon Rich, Cambridge (artist, designer, founder for the Center for Urban Pedagogy). Damon will talk about using and abusing of public space, having Warsaw as the case study.
  • „A Guide to the New Ruins” by Owen Hatherley, London (lecturer, writer, architecture critic). Owen will talk about the future of cities and what is still left to be predicted.
  • AD SPACE workshops by Finn Williams from the The Common Office in London and 'Moje Miasto A w Nim' Association from Warsaw. These workshops are meant for young architects and advertising agencies people that will be seeking better and more useful forms of the outdoor advertising

The programme is realised within the framework of the Capital City of Warsaw candidacy for title of the European Capital of Culture 2016.
