Ownership

IELTS is owned, developed and delivered through the partnership of the British Council, IDP Education Australia: IELTS Australia and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.  



Test Module  

IELTS is available in two formats – Academic and General Training:

The Academic Module is taken by those applying for further studies and professional registration.

The General Training Module is generally suitable for those who are going to English-speaking countries to complete work experience and training programmes or for immigration purposes.

Please seek clarification with the appropriate agencies/ institutions as to which module is most suitable for you.



Test Format  

Candidates are tested in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking module but there is a choice between the Academic and General Training for the Reading and Writing modules. Click here for more information



Test scores  

Results are recorded on a Test Report Form (TRF) with separate band scores from 1 to 9 for the four skills and one for overall ability. Click here for more information



Who recognises IELTS?

IELTS is recognised by educational institutions in many countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the USA. It is also recognised by professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies. For specific band score requirements, click the following:
