WHAT HAPPENS ON THE TEST DAY?

Find out what happens on the test day including information on rules and regulations

ANNOUNCEMENT

As part of the IELTS candidate identity verification process, British Council will start implementing finger scanning as an additional security measure in all test locations beginning 30 June 2012 IELTS examination.  

Candidates will have their photo and finger scan taken on the Speaking test day or Written test day, whichever is scheduled first.   The photograph taken by the test centre will appear on the IELTS Test Report Form.

The process has been developed to provide additional protection for genuine candidates against fraudsters, and to meet the increasing test security expectations of organisations that accept IELTS test scores.

This process will be undertaken in compliance with relevant Privacy and Data Protection legislation.  Your digital photograph and all personal data will be used only for the purpose of the IELTS test.

All other application requirements and test day policies remain unchanged and will be upheld by the test centre.

Before the test (0800 – 0900)

You must:

  • Arrive at the exam venue by 8.00a.m. for registration
  • Look for your name in the candidate entry lists posted outside the exam room. Please remember your candidate number
  • Find the location of your designated seat in the seating plan posted beside the candidate entry lists. Your seat number is the same as your candidate number
  • Deposit all your belongings including mobile phones at the designated baggage area. You are only allowed take your ID, wooden pencil(s), sharpener, and eraser into the test  
  • Visit the comfort room before registration as you will not be given time for toilet breaks once the test has started
  • Line up at registration table according to your candidate number. Present your ID and sign the attendance register
  • Have your photo and finger scan taken at the Photograph Section, if you did not have an Advanced Speaking Test. Have your photo and finger scan verified if you have already had your Advance Speaking Test.
  • Enter the exam room and find your seat. Find the desk label with your name and candidate number
  • The Moderator begins reading the instructions at exactly 9.00a.m. Late candidates are not allowed to enter the test and the exam fee is forfeited.

During the test (0900 – 1200)

You must:

  • Listen carefully to the Moderator and follow instructions
  • Raise your hand to attract attention if you are in doubt about what you should do. An invigilator will assist you
  • Tell the Invigilator at once if you think you have not been given the right question paper, or if the question paper is incomplete or illegible
  • Do not lend anything to, or borrow anything from another candidate during the test
  • Do not speak to any other candidate during the test
  • Expect random ID checks during the timed portion of the test

The speaking test

You must:

  • Check the Speaking Test schedule posted at the registration area. Note the time of your interview, name of your examiner and test venue.
  • Arrive at the speaking venue 30 minutes before your scheduled interview time
  • Bring your ID
  • Register with the invigilator when you arrive. Go to the waiting area until the invigilator calls you for your interview
  • Deposit your baggage and cell phones with invigilator. You must not take anything inside the interview room
  • The speaking test lasts between 11 to 14 minutes.
  • Leave the test venue immediately after your interview. Do not talk to waiting candidates.

NOTE: Parking is usually available at or near test venues but the British Council will not be responsible for any parking related fees which candidates incur.
