YOUNG FILIPINA TAKES PART IN GENEE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
Irene Kim Abrogena, 16 years old, competed among 71 candidates at the Genee International Competition at the St James Theatre in Wellington, New Zealand last December. Instructed by the Claravall School of Dance under Marilinda Claravall since she was 7 years old, Irene trained using the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus. She competed against RAD-trained dancers between the ages of 15 and 19 from countries including Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Indonesia, Philippines, the UK, USA and Spain.
The Genee International Competition is recognised as one of the ballet world’s most prestigious competition. It represents the pinnacle of achievement for young people trained in the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus.
The competition is open to dancers who are current Members of the Royal Academy of Dance and have passed the RAD Intermediate, Advanced 1 as well as Advanced 2 examination in Classical Ballet with Distinction. It offers aspiring dancers the unique opportunity to work with world-renowned choreographers and professionals as well as the chance to perform on an international stage and often launches them on a professional career.
Each year, Irene took RAD exams conducted by a representative from the London Headquarters and has achieved Distinction in all levels. Irene Kim Abrogena is now a member of the Philippine Ballet Theatre Inc, the classical ballet company of the Philippines.
