Listening downloads

You'll find some sound and video downloads for children on this page:
http://www.britishcouncil.org/kids-listening

The downloads are for children, and in most cases are made by children. Children ask the questions, do the reviews. If you and your children like the downloads you'll find more of them on Radio Children.

USING THE DOWNLOADS

The downloads are best for learners who have a higher level of English. The files are quite long, and the children featured in the files are using very natural, authentic English. The files may feature words and phrases that your child does not understand. Encourage your child not to worry about every word or phrase that they don't know. It is a good idea for your child to have something to do when they are listening to the files. You'll find activities you can download and print that will your child when listening to the files.

HOW TO LISTEN AND DOWNLOAD

To download the files, right-click on the title, choose 'Save target as', and select where you want to save the file. If you're a using a Mac, simply double-click on the link and use the on-screen window to select the file's destination.

If you want to listen on your PC, just left click and the file will play in your default player. For Mac users, click the title.

LISTENING ACTIVITIES

You will find activities that you can download and print. The worksheets have activities that you can do with your child before listening, while listening, and after listening.

Before listening activities: Do these before you listen to the file. They will introduce the topic, some of the vocabulary, and you can use them to ask your child about the topic (for example, what food do you like?)

While listening actiivties: It is a good idea to look at these before you listen too. Look up any words you don't know in a dictionary. if possible, ask your child what they think the answers might be. Now you and your child will know what you need to listen for, and will be more prepared to listen to the file. Help your child as much as possible - it is important that your child enjoys doing this activity, and doesn't feel demoralised. The soundfiles are quite long. It is a good idea to pause the soundfiles often, and to replay parts. And remember, you don't have to listen to all of it. You will find the answers at the end of the worksheet.

After listening activities: If you and your child have enjoyed the activities, there are suggestions on the worksheets for activities that you can do.

MORE DOWNLOADS FOR HIGHER LEVEL LEARNERS

You will find soundfiles for the longer stories featured on LearnEnglish Kids. There is a soundfile for each page. You can listen online or download them onto your computer. Your child can listen to these while they read the text. http://www.britishcouncil.org/kids-stories-long.htm

LISTENING ACTIVITIES FOR LOWER LEVELS

There are stories and songs for all levels on LearnEnglish Kids. All songs and stories have sound files. With the stories, children can listen to the text as they read, and with many stories they can click the 'red' button to switch the text on and off.

You will also find online activities to practise listening on the Listen Up page in the games section.
