British Council is UK's international organisation for educational and cultural relations and manages a wide range of activities covering the arts, science, technology and education. Through our work we aim to build and develop long-term relationships with governments, organisations and people to provide mutual benefit and promote a wider knowledge of the UK and the English language. All jobs in the organisation contribute towards these aims. All our work is concerned with people and involves quality and customer care.
Those of us who work for the British Council are committed to working for international understanding and we share the belief that cultural relations is the way in which international understanding happens.
As an organisation, our identity is based on five values that guide us in what we do and how we work.
- Valuing people
- Integrity
- Mutuality
- Creativity
- Professionalism
We have a set of six Behaviours that we demonstrate everyday at work to help us achieve our objectives and live our values.
All Behaviours are required to be demonstrated at an essential level by each staff member, but some Behaviours may be set at more challenging levels for some member of staff, depending on their role. These Behaviours are used as an important tool in recruitment and performance management.
Creating Shared Purpose
I gain the active support of other people so they are fully engaged and motivated to contribute effectively. I do this by communicating our purpose in a way that others can understand and that achieves shared clarity. I help them understand the part they play, so that our aims are clear to all.
Connecting with Others
I find common ground and build relationships and connections to support British Council goals. I do this by building trust with others, by paying attention to their concerns and needs, and showing that I understand their interests. I achieve understanding and trust in a culturally sensitive way – whatever my role.
Working Together
Knowing that we will achieve more with other people than we can do separately, by sharing goals and resources to add more value, I work towards common goals. I collaborate with mutual respect, valuing others equally, and aiming to ensure we share success.
Being Accountable
I show accountability and commitment to the British Council and I show resilience and determination in my work. I hold myself and others responsible for delivering goals in line with the shared purpose of the British Council. I give and accept constructive feedback to maximise high performance and manage under-performance.
Making it Happen
I deliver excellent results, achieve challenging goals and develop myself and others. I do this by setting clear and demanding objectives to deliver what is required. I stay focused on measurable outcomes, while building longer-term capability. I demonstrate standards of excellence and deliver value for money. I measure progress and adapt plans when necessary.
Shaping the Future
I achieve better ways of doing business, greater effectiveness and growth by using my professionalism, knowledge and expertise creatively. I spot new opportunities, plan appropriately and create innovative solutions that recognise ambiguity and deliver business benefit.
