Connected to UK’s Creativity in the Arts

The UK's arts are amongst the most vibrant in the world, whether in theatres and galleries, the clubs and streets, or in the virtual world. Every year we run up to 2000 arts events, reaching an audience of millions, and nurturing long lasting relationships between artists internationally.

We support some of the best of UK artists to travel to Pakistan and give performances or collaborate with local artists. Through this we hope to give a modern, diverse picture of the UK, and promote better understanding between the UK and Pakistan. As well as high profile performances and exhibitions, we support workshops, seminars and online events.

Most of our arts work helps young people from the UK and Pakistan connect and explore cultural issues. Many of our projects support Connecting Futures, which is a new five-year initiative from the British Council to build deeper mutual understanding, learning and respect between young people from different cultural backgrounds.

Sustaining identity and heritage through design
A workshop on ‘Sustaining identity and heritage through design’ at Karachi’s Textile Institute of Pakistan (TIP) brought together 23 art students from all over Pakistan.  The workshop was part of the New Silk Route, a British Council project running in six countries in the Central and South Asia region. The project is an attempt to draw on the region’s strong traditional craft and design heritage. The week long workshop was led by Maki Suzuki and Kajsa Stahl from Abake, a graphic design studio based in London. Students from different educational and economic backgrounds were selected through a national design competition. Although a challenge initially, the group eventually gelled together and enjoyed the opportunity to work with new people.
