The winners of the prestigious Linking Minds teacher travel scholarships for 2012 have been announced.

They are: Stacey Reriti-Smith (Natone Park School, Porirua), Piata Allen  (Massey High School, Waitakere), Viki Exter (Roslyn Kindergarten, Palmerston North) and Nichola McCall  (Manurewa High School, Manukau).

“This year we received 150 applications which is a record, we had more applications than usual from teachers in low decile areas, and the level of interest and proficiency in Te Reo was a step change higher than in previous years,” said British Council NZ Country Director Ingrid Leary.

The selected teachers will spend a fortnight hosted by a local authority in the UK. While there, the teachers will have the opportunity to learn about latest trends and initiatives in the UK, and to share current thinking and ideas from New Zealand. One of the areas they will specifically explore will be a human rights based approach to learning, advocated by the Human Rights Communities in Education Trust.
