Linking Minds is a prestigious international award for young teachers who identify themselves as emerging leaders. The award is sponsored by the NZ - UK Link Foundation, the British Council, the New Zealand Teachers Council and the Ministry of Education. The programme aims to recognise and promote effective teaching by providing international experience for teachers early in their careers. The award funds four New Zealand teachers to spend two weeks over the April holiday period of every second year attached to a Local Authority in the United Kingdom exploring best practice in the region. An additional component examining language immersion settings in a Welsh language school will also be included in the programme. Participants must be in their first five years as fully NZ registered teachers in the schools sector and under 35 years old. The costs of travel, accommodation and general living expenses including interview and selection costs will be met.
Applications are open for the 2010 travel component and are welcome from teachers in the primary, secondary, Māori medium and early childhood sectors who show leadership potential, and who demonstrate effective and/or innovative practice. Applications close on 13 November 2009.

This fully-funded two-week professional development trip to the UK is a prestigious award for young teachers (under 35) who are emerging leaders. Selected teachers will have opportunities to build on and develop new knowledge, skills and confidence in their leadership capacity both as classroom teachers and as leaders in their schools.

The theme of a Linking Minds visit is professional leadership. All four teachers have taken on leadership roles in their schools very early in their career, and were seen as having significant potential to be future leaders in the New Zealand education system.

The selected teachers will spend a fortnight hosted by a local authority in the UK. While there, the teachers will have the opportunity to learn about latest trends and initiatives in the UK, and to share current thinking and ideas from New Zealand. One of the areas they will specifically explore will be a human rights based approach to learning, advocated by the Human Rights Communities in Education Trust.
