“From Rushdie to Jyllands-Posten” Debating Islam in our multi-ethnic societies

Note for editors

The UK has almost 2 million muslims. The British Council together with the Association of Muslim Social Scientists published in 2006 a media guide entitled “British Muslims”. This publication flowed from the events of 9/11 and the reactions to it among Muslims and non-Muslims alike. It is a clear, dispassionate explanation of who in all their variety British Muslims are, what they care about and what they do.

The British Council is using its publication as an opportunity to share UK perspectives on the use of “soft power”, unbiased, factual information, produced in a sensitive, trusting and collaborative cross-cultural context, to stimulate greater understanding between and within communities and states.
