Our Shared Europe

What is Our Shared Europe?

Our Shared Europe is the British Council’s response to some of the major cultural challenges facing Europe today. The programme acts to create opportunities to discuss and share a variety of perspectives on integration, migration, diversity and pluralism in contemporary Europe.

Our Shared Europe seeks to explore our shared values, perspectives and behaviours in a way that is based on mutual respect and trust. In particular it is about how to acknowledge the contribution of a diverse set of communities and cultures – both in the past but also in the present – to the shaping of contemporary European society. This means recognising the rich and diverse roots of our culture and society and using this recognition to build a more inclusive view of the continent that we all share.

As with all work in the Society area we aim to build a platform to create open and unprejudiced dialogue on often sensitive and widely disputed cross-community issues.

We are constantly seeking to engage with Norwegian partners who share these concerns with us to discuss and explore opportunities for joint initiatives.

Examples of Our Shared Europe activity in Norway include the debates From open values to burqa bans: have Europeans lost their tolerance? And the Diversity Debate: Facts, Fiction and Fantasy (both available on Our Shared Europe’s Vimeo page:  http://vimeo.com/oursharedeurope
