PhDs

If you have completed a Masters degree and would like to continue your studies to Doctoral level then a PhD is the next step for you.

The Doctor of Philosophy is the UK's highest academic award. Most university lectures and allmost all heads of departments or faculties have obtained this qualification. The degree is often described as a D.Phil, a Ph.D, a doctorate or even as doctoral research, as the degree is usually based on a period of scholarly research as opposed to taught courses.

Pattern and length of study

You will be expected to work on your own to a large extent, under the guidance of a supervisor. The minimum period required to complete a PhD is three years. In the first year you normally devote yourself to identifying a topic and survey as much pertinent literature as possible so as to prove the originality of the research. The second year you will work on proving hypotheses and formulating specific conslusions, whereas you will spend most of the third year on 'writing up' the thesis. The length of the thesis normally range from 70.000 to 100.000 words.

Entry Requirements

To apply for a PhD you will need a taught or research Masters degree in a relevant subject plus English Language proficiency (e.g. IELTS band 6 or above). An outstanding academic record is expected. In exceptional circumstances, considerable professional experience after a Bachelor degree might be considered sufficient for entry to a doctoral research programme. To apply you need to contact the institution direct to obtain the appropriate information related to their application procedures.
