Entry requirements

Do you want apply for UK degree course? Depending on the course you choose there will be different entry requirements. Find out how to apply for the level you require.

To get into a UK higher education institution you must satisfy both general requirements and course requirements before you will be accepted onto a course.

Entry requirements at Undergraduate level

When applying for a Bachelor degree you need to have generell studiekompetanse, realkompetanse (yrkeserfaring) or International Baccalaureate. Some courses have additional requirements tailored to the specific study, however these may vary depending on the institution. If you are applying for Art or Design courses you can be called in for an interview or asked to submit a portfolio of your work. Institutions rarely ask for work experience, however if you do have relevant work experience , this could work in your favour. Some elite universities, such as Oxford and Cambridge will allways demand that you attend an interview as part of their application process.

Entry requirements at Postgraduate level

For entry to taught postgraduate courses (Masters degrees, postgraduate diplomas and postgraduate certificates), you will need an undergraduate degree or equivalent in a relevant area. For example, to study chemistry at Masters level, you would need to have a degree in chemistry. However, 'conversion' courses are designed to provide an intensive introduction to a subject. For these programmes, any UK undergraduate degree is sufficient, even one in an unrelated area. For example, you might have studied history for your first degree, but could use a conversion course to prepare for a Master of Science (MSc) degree in information technology.

For a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme, you will need a UK Masters degree or equivalent from your country. If you do not have a Masters degree, you may be able to register initially for a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Master of Research (MRes) course and then transfer to the PhD programme later if your progress has been good.

Do I need to take an English language test?

Some institutions only require that you have an average mark of four in English from videregående skole, whereas others will want you to do an English language test. The most popular language tests are the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test and the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). IELTS is accepted by most British, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand academic institutions. In the United States it is increasingly gaining recognition as an alternative to TOEFL.
