Hello!

Hello, my name is Marte Dagre and I’m in my second year of a four-year Bachelor degree in Business Computing and IT at Aston University in Birmingham.

Why I chose to study?

Abroad:
Because I thought it would be a challenge, and I wanted to experience a new culture and ways of thinking.

In the UK:
It has always appealed to me because of the friendly people and the high quality of the universities.

At Aston University:
Because Aston is renowned for the high standard of their Business School, and because all their activities occur in one compact campus in the city centre. I have always wanted to study in a big and vibrant city.

The Business Computing and IT degree:
It appealed to me because it’s a mix of business and IT, and gives me a skill-set that will always be relevant.

My impressions

What’s university life like?:
Aston University is fairly small (6000 students) and close-knit. The introductory week for International Students was fun and I quickly made lasting friendships. I am now active in the Raise and Give Society, fundraising for different charities through street collections and sponsored events. I am Webmaster on the committee and get to travel around the UK. I also do aerobics three times a week, and often attend Student Union events.

What’s Aston Business School like?:
Very high quality and all the lecturers and staff are friendly and helpful. I do 12 modules a year, with exams in January and June. I also have optional modules, which enable me to focus on my strengths and interests.

What’s Birmingham like?:
England’s second city is in many ways as good as London. The nightlife is amazing, and cheap for students. There are cafes, cinemas, theatres, bowling, ice-skating, excellent shopping, and it’s cheaper than London!

Looking ahead…

Work experience/placement:
Next year I do a one-year industrial placement, an amazing opportunity to get invaluable work experience.

After graduation:
After a big ceremony with my family and friends, I plan to return to Norway to work. Although you never know what the future will bring, a successful placement may result in a graduate job offer that might take me anywhere in the world!

The UK benefit

I am really enjoying my degree, have improved my language skills and gained knowledge and experience that I can use in the future. I have also learnt to adapt to a new culture, and to relocate and make new friends. It was daunting at first, being all alone in a foreign country, but everyone have been so friendly and helpful all the way! I would certainly recommend everyone to study abroad if you get the chance; it has been an unforgettable experience.
