British Council Northern Ireland
City of culture 2013
Teaching divided histories

The use of moving image and digital media will be the catalyst for this new approach to teaching and learning about conflict. The project will bring together post-primary teachers from across Northern Ireland and the border counties to develop and pilot a range of innovative education programmes that use film, digital photography, animation, comic books and webcasting to enable young people to explore common experiences of conflict and peace building. These teachers and educators will be trained in a range of creative and critical skills so that they can use moving image and digital technologies within the classroom to liberate and empower young people to engage practically with issues of conflict and division.

By drawing on best practice in the international field of conflict education through the networks of the British Council, the project will give teachers the confidence, skills and the specific kinds of resourcing and support that will enable them to explore contentious history and identity in the classroom.

The project partners will carry out research and piloting into how new teaching methodologies and qualifications in moving image education, developed by CCEA in Northern Ireland, can be transferred to schools in the Republic and shared with schools in a number of other countries that are experiencing or emerging from conflict. An International Conference held in Derry in 2013 as part of the City of Culture programme will provide an invaluable opportunity to share learning and showcase the work of the project to a global audience.
